Somebody earlier asked how many SA-CD players there were but I couldn't find the original query:
"News from Sony indicates that there is global installed base of more than 13 million Super Audio CD players, with in excess of 180 models currently available from 37 manufacturers covering every application from entry-level stereo players to high-end multi-channel audiophile systems. The number of manufacturers seeking licenses and the number of models available continues an upward year-on-year trend." - Super Audio CD News
Support for SA-CD is still on track for the PS3 later this year which should boost numbers considerably.

Hi,
few years ago Sony decided to put SACD to almost every DVD-player they had. The idea was to create a large customer base for SACD i.e. bringing SACD to the masses. Obviously, the mass market DVD-players are a very cost oriented and Sony could not get higher price from the SACD/DVD players -> they soon decided to forget SACD from all mass market products because SACD did not have any appeal in this market segment.
The number of SACD lisencees has grown e.g. because the "high end" Chinese stereo tube-amplified SACD players have arrived.
Majority of SACD lisencees are small companies very much in the same way as SACD record companies are quite small companies. The nische market applies for both the players and the SACDs.

eesau, do you mean small like Arcam, Cambridge, Harman/Kardon, Krell, Linn, Luxman, Musical Fidelity and NAD etc? Or small like Denon, Marantz, Mitsubishi, Onkyo, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sherwood, Sony, Teac, Toshiba and Yamaha, - all of whom produce SACD players? Brenda

Neither ... or both. The accompanying DAC is scheduled for release in 2012 (just kidding).
