has anyone heard this sacd player? i believe it is just coming on the market, but there may have been a few around in the states as early as january. it is apparently the replacement for the marantz 8260. however the 8001 appears to be stereo only, like their higher end units. music direct has it for $899.

you may have seen an announcement about a model never released in the u.s. market, the marantz 7001, widely available in the u.k. and japan (as a matter of fact, it can be purchased for u.s. use on a japanese website, together w/ an inexpensive transformer).

supposedly both these models have incorporated marantz' technology employed in their pricey models; and they both appear to be stereo only single disc units.

it's good to see a few "not a sony" inexpensive sacd players coming out.

I haven't heard it but I gather (using Babelfish) from this page http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20060220/marantz.htm that it shares certain components with the high-end SA-15S1.

It's supposed to be 'mid-end'. Note that it's stereo only. See http://us.marantz.com/Products/1644.asp# and page 7 of the thread about '13 million SA-CD players'.

EDIT: oops. sorry for including superfluous quote. There's no way to remove that afterwards, is there?

Looks like the SA7001 KI is not sold in Japan (only in Europe). The KI version is an upgraded version of the 7001.

When comparing the technical specs of both players (the 7001 KI and the 8001), they seem to be equal. For me both players are the same, only the name changes.

SA7001 KI (found on Marantz European website)

SA-CD playback
Copperplated chassis / rigid dual layer chassis
The tray is finished with an elegant coating that also dampens vibration
Minimal effect on laser diffusion
The CS4397 ’Super DAC’ from Cirrus Logic
Current Feedback HDAMs
Customized components
Dedicated power supply with toroidal transformer
Dedicated top quality headphone circuitry with a fast current-buffer amp
Display off possibility
Quick Replay
Marantz D-Bus

SA8001 (found on Marantz USA website)

Plays Stereo SACD, CD, CD, CD-R/RW
Current Feedback Circuit with Marantz Original HDAM®
Cirrus Logic CS4397 DAC with Digital Filter
Exclusively Designed Original Mechanism for Audio Playback
Zero Impedance Copper Ground Plate for Analog Terminals
Double Layered Bottom Chassis
Audiophile Grade Power Supply Unit with Toroidal Transformer
Audiophile Grade Selected Components and Terminals
Quick Replay mode
High Quality Headphone Circuit
Super Audio CD Text
D-BUS (RC-5 In/Out) Remote Connection
Detachable Power Cord
Device Remote

The only differences I can see are purely cosmetic (thin buttons under the LED panel on the 8001). Weight is also the same. Price range is the same and the marketing description / product positioning is also similar to the 7001 KI.
