Discussion: Kanno: Light, Water, Rainbow... - Ogawa

Well, I seem to be on a roll with BIS. I found another Multichannel recording of theirs with discrete use of the rear channels. Actually, only certain sections actively use the rear channels. This is, after all, a piano recital. But, tracks 1 and 5 also include electronics with a computer...and this provides some unusual but fascinating effects in the surrounds. Three traditional Japanese instruments join the piano on the other tracks. Ms. Ogawa herself plays them while at the same time playing the piano. So, these tracks were recorded in the more 'standard' way with ambient rear channels, which still sound fairly immersive.

But... How I wish the WHOLE DISC could also have active, discrete rear channels. Now THAT would have provided REAL ambiance.

All the same this is a stimulating collection of piano music. The style is modern but very accessible. The title "Light, Water, Rainbow..." seems appropriate as the music has a strong connection with Debussy, Satie, Ravel, and the world of Impressionism. The electronics hint at Tomita, but Yoshihiro Kanno is able to find his own voice throughout. With the Japanese instruments, he was able to add another dimension which works in harmony with the piano. The piano image of the recording is set back a bit allowing ample resonance but still providing plenty of bass, especially during the eruption of scales that occasionally breaks the serenity of the program.

Noriko Ogawa gives an exquisite performance. One in which, she makes full use of the range of colors on her palette.

Very nice, indeed. I hope BIS continues and further expands its Multichannel recordings with discrete and active rear channels.
