I only have the original CD's, not the SACD reissue, so I don't really want to comment on the SQ (although I do like it on the CD's). As for the performances, as I've mentioned before, I think Neumann was one of the really great representatives of the Central European style of conducting, but by the time he made this set, he had slowed down a bit. If you compare the performances on this set with his much earlier recording of selected Beethoven Overtures with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (on the Teldec label), those earlier performances are generally much more vital and spirited in comparison. Nevertheless, many of the performances in this Exton (formerly Canyon) set are very worthwhile and embody a granitic strength and integrity. Because of the sometimes very slow tempos, this set will not be to all tastes, but I've continued to enjoy it myself ever since I bought the CD incarnation in the late 90's.
