76 cm/sec analogue tape with mono heads - the ultra high-end equipment of the era! (No intention of being ironic, by the way - seriously: this and the 1954 VPO Bruckner 8th may be the best-sounding we have of Furtwängler.)

According to the description on Amazon, they've gone back to the original tapes and lowered the pitch a bit, resulting in timing differences. I'd be curious to hear comments from those who have heard both this and Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 - Furtwängler from Tahra who can compare the sound.

I am anxious to get a copy and compare it to the Tahra issue. However, my order through importcds.com was cancelled as unobtainable, which seems to be the case about everywhere. Hopefully stocks will be replinished soon.

Has anyone been able to compare? I just received the Tahra issue but haven't opened it yet and was thinking I would swap it for this issue.

The Audite is also available from at least one source (based in Germany, but without region restrictions) as a 24/48 download at about a third less than the SACD.
