James Dean left a far greater legacy to motion pictures than Jeff Buckley did to music.
People may not have liked his style but there is no doubt he demanded attention for his powerful portrayal of characters.
That it would be difficult to imagine others of such a young age emulating what he did on screen would be an understatement.

Just watched the beautifully remastered (both PQ/SQ 5.1) BD~V of Rebel Without a Cause recently and it was indeed a VERY powerful James Dean performance and I would agree that Buckley is NOT in his league.
Ditto for Dean's performances in both East of Eden and Giant...........

Brett....the MISFITS?.........Watched it recently and agree with the critics: not one of Huston's best and the last performances (ironically) from Monroe, Gable and Clift. Not to mention, Monroe was suffering from depression and was a no show on the set contributing to a very troubled and difficult shoot...coupled with her disintegrating marriage to Misfit screenwriter Arthur Miller.
GIANT is very long and a bit tedious but Dean is absolutely brilliant mumbling his way through George Steven's epic. BTW, Rock Hudson hated Dean and were it not for Liz Taylor's intervention (she befriended Jimmy) it would NOT have been a very pleasant set to work on.
Had Hudson pounded on Dean like he wanted to the movie might have been called MIDGET.....;-D

Critics!? I don't have much use for them. They just follow the money train. But if you need critical approval, here is what Wikipedia has to say about The Misfits...
"Despite on-set difficulties, Gable, Monroe, and Clift delivered performances that modern critics consider superb. Many critics regard Gable's performance to be his finest, and Gable, after seeing the rough cuts, agreed. Monroe received the 1961 Golden Globe Award as "World Film Favorite" in March 1962, five months before her death. Directors Guild of America nominated Huston as best director...
...The film has a 100% on the film-critics aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, based on 13 latter-day reviews."
Granted Misfits is quirky, but it is much more enjoyable to watch than Giant. And for the record, I like James Dean. Hey, he's from Indiana, right? ;-)
Clark Gable is a pleasure to watch...as always. And the offbeat feeling of the movie brings everyone together so well...Monroe, Clift, and let's not forget Guido... Tuco...oh sorry I meant Eli Wallach.

I just think it's wonderful to have ALL these older classics available in pristine BD~V remasterings for NOT a lot of money.
Just ordered the Criterion BD~V of La Dolce Vita (Fellini's Satyricon is coming out early next year from Criterion).

It's really amazing how they are bringing these masterpieces of the sliver screen back to life with such crystal clear image and sound quality. I recently watched some of Charlie Chaplin's early works and a documentary. 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the start of his filmmaking career...

I'm a HUGE Chaplin Fan, Brett. Just purchased a BD~A remastered box set of his work. Even have a bunch of Super 8mm Blackhawk reels of his work (DISMAL compared to the BD~As).
BTW, just curious: Do you think Brokeback Mountain deserved the Academy Award for BEST PICTURE over Traffic?
IMHO, Traffic was manipulative and didn't hold a candle to Ang Lee's heartwrenching masterpiece. Heath Ledger, hands down, should have won the Academy Award for Best Actor. His performance was brilliant.
BTW, am ordering GRACE on SACD (just to get back on topic)!
