I don't know these works well enough to even contemplate a formal review, but they reflect their respective composers at their most lyrical, so much so that only a few other discs in my collection have afforded such unalloyed pleasure. Christian Poltera is absolutely brilliant, the sound quality is among BIS' best (or anyone else's for that matter), and the OSESP under the late Frank Shipway offer powerful support. If I were one of those guys who get to make up an annual "want list" this would be right at the top.

Will this be Shipway's last recording?

To the best of my knowledge, unfortunately, yes.

Shipway was not much recorded, due to his 'temperament' which unfortunately over-rode his talent.
His Alpensinfonie on BIS is a fine example of his work and cannot be recommended too highly.
