Thread: Do lower-end SACD players downmix 5.1 to 2.0?

I'm in what I'm sure is an all-too-common position. Want to play SACDs but I don't have a lot of cash to spend. I'm considering picking up a Pioneer DV-563A, or possibly a used Sony DVP-NS755V. Here's the thing: my reciever (a Technics) lacks the 6-channel inputs necessary to get 5.1 from SACDs, so I'm limited to stereo. Will either of these units downmix 5.1 SACDs to 2.0? I really want to hear Dark Side of the Moon and several other 5.1 SACDs, but obviously buying one of these players is worthless at this point if they won't mix 5.1 down to stereo. Upgrading my reciever is also out of the question, unless I can get a nice used one and sell my old one (worth $75-100 maybe) for less than $200 net.

Any opinions or advice is appreciated.

According to the standard every SACD MUST at least have a 2 channel DSD track. Consequently every player can be setup to play either the Multichannel- or the Stereotrack.

All SACDs (well apart from a multichannel sampler from Philips Electronics) have a separate stereo signal. This isn't a downmix. So you just select stereo on the player and feed the stereo analogue outputs to your receiver. Just like you would for CD.

Okay, I understand. I always thought mentioning a stereo track referred to a redbook CD layer on a hybrid disc. Now I know otherwise. Thanks!

errr... except Terminator 2 - Soundtrack

Unless my player is malfunctionning with that particular SA-CD, it only has "CD Stereo" and "SACD Surround" tracks. There's no "SACD Stereo" track, contrary to the emblems on the packaging.

It appears that the sony you mention along with the pioneer are from their regular line. I understand you are on a budget so here's what to look for.

Sony's C222ES from their higher-end line, catch someone that needs the cash fast and you could get it for 250 or less. It's a dedicated machine by the way.

Other SACD options include the 963SA by philips, but that might be too rich for you, check out the...... I believe it's the DVD763SA from philips. I think it's better than the standard Sony, it upsamples regular CDs from the standard 44.1K/16 bit to 192k/24 bit, at least that's what I recall, GOOGLE search that baby. It's a psuedo hi-res thing. From the comments I've come across, everyone digs it. It also plays back 2 and 6 channel SACD. Also hit ebay for the cheapest SACD player from Pioneer Elite, sometimes they go for cheap when someone needs the cash fast.

As for receivers, check out one that is like a poor man's hi-end receiver. I used to own a Technics SA-DX1040 and the sister model is SA-DA8 I believe.

Dolby, DTS, 5.1 analog ins for SACD/DVD-A freq response of 10hz to 100khz.

It first hit crutchfield.com back in 2001 or so for $450, and then dropped like a brick after that. In the direct analog mode it is ultra clean and it's great for SACD on a budget, I used that thing for SACD for the first year that I had a SACD player.

As for the two channel thing, yes every SACD must have a two channel SACD recording. The T2 thing is really weird. I never knew that disc existed.

It must be a mistake, and when one like that is made, what is Sony/Philips going to do? You kind of have to let that go. But with that exception, all SACDs do in fact have a 5.1 and 2 channel mix. I only use the 2 channel mix for headphone use.
