Exactly what you expect from the Terminator: synthesized sounds best described as metallic, mechanical, rythmic, hopless and dark. Very fitting for the movie, but as a stand alone soundtrack, I find it difficult to listen to the unmelodic and action driven cues. The Terminator Theme of course sounds great, and - especially in multichannel – fills your listening room (“Main Title” Track 1 and “It’s Over” Track 20). Throughout the disc, the theme surfaces once in a while, but there are not enough of these satisfying moments to carry you through the whole soundtrack.

There seems to be no separate SACD stereo mix. When selecting “stereo”, the output is still multichannel. This should not be a problem, because the rear channels are mostly for ambiance only anyway. Nevertheless the additional channels (rear + center) are a great enhancement for widening the sound, which seems to hover in your room.

For T2, Brad Fiedel reprises and expands upon his sound design developed for the first Terminator movie. His electronic palette has considerably increased in the time span separating the two movies. A mechanical, icy and almost all-synth score depicts the Terminator universe.

This SACD reprises the same material which originally appeared on the Varese Sarabande CD release of the soundtrack. There are no new tracks here.

The only bonus is the multichannel mix. The DSD multichannel transfers do not, to my ears, improve upon the actual sound quality of the music. Where the improvement comes from is the added dimension provided by the multichannel mix. The rear & front channels produce very similar content almost simultaneously. This rear 'reverb' only reinforces Fiedel's original sound design.
Bass seems more prominent than on the original CD.

Not a very daring multichannel mix, but very effective.

Interestingly, my player could only detect two programs on the disc: a CD layer, and an SACD multichannel mix. The disc's packaging states however that there is also an SACD stereo mix which my player seems unable to find (or which does not exist at all?).

In any case, it is an improvement over the regular CD release.
