OK ... please help me if you can.

I connect my DVD player to receiver using Analog connectors for 5.1 surround sound.
I use this DVD player to play SACD and DVDA music.

As you see on the attached picture, my DVD player is showing that it's outputting 2 channel audio ... and yet my receiver at Ext-IN is playing 2.1 ... I can hear my SUB playing.

Now ... I noticed the same thing when this DVD player was outputting 5ch surround without the .1 and yet my sub was active as well.

Did I connect things wrong? I thought Analog connection using Ext-IN is like Pure Direct mode.

thank you

I'm no expert on home theatre systems, but it looks like your receiver is configured in a way that your sub is always active. That mode is meant for systems with small speakers, which need the assistance of a sub whatever the number of channels of the source is. The receiver generates the 0.1 signal from the x.0 input signal.

Doers it matter? I have those analog cables plugged into CD input on receiver. Why would it matter?

The lit up Channel Icons on your Denon receiver show that you have 5.1 active channels, you have selected Ext.in which is the analog 5.1 input so this is correct.
I assume you have 6 analog cables connected from the back of the DVDs 5.1 output and connected correctly to the corresponding 5.1 Ext.in on the back of your Denon receiver. Do check they are all connected properly ( ie FL to FL, FR to FR, C to C, etc...)as getting this wrong can cause some channels to be lost.

If you have it all connected correctly, then because you are using the 5.1 analog input into the receiver there shouldn't be any processing/EQ/Bass Management being carried out by your receiver, it will simply amplify the signal coming from the DVD players 5.1 analog output.

Regarding if the signal is pure will be down to the DVD players settings, turn off EQ/Bass Management inside the DVD player. You will then hear your SACDs being played back as pure as possible. Also engage Pure Direct mode on your player which will switch off internal video signals and also blank out the display. The DVD player "depending on model" should do a pure internal DSD to Analog conversion ( with no PCM conversion prior to this ) and output said signal via the 5.1 analog outputs and straight into your receiver to be amplified.

Hope that helps

PS... Am I to assume you are using just the front left/ front right of your 5.1 DVD output channels to connect to the front left/ front right 5.1 input channels on your receiver to connect your DVD player? I'm not sure connecting this way would make the signal any purer if you are simply playing back CDs. If you are just playing back CDs I would just stick to connecting the standard stereo phonos from the back of the DVD players stereo output and connect it into the Denons stereo CD input, then just select Direct button on the Denon Receivers front panel to get the purest sound.

EDIT: Looking at the photo provided in the configuration shown all you should be getting is left and right stereo signals and no subwoofer. The DVD display shows only left and right channels are active, if this is being piped through the 5.1 analog input of the receiver then all you will get is the left and right channels, the receiver will not create a subwoofer channel for you from the stereo signal.
