I think that this is the best recording of Strauss' "Alpine Symphony"! BBC Music Magazine gave five stars, and this recording got Gramophone's "Editor's Choice". What do you think?

If you can tolerate the dry acoustics of Barbican then LSO live SACD’s represent a real bargain, I have tried but I just can not come to terms with LSO Live house sound. And if that is not bad enough I have good many Haitink recordings with Concertgebow, its tough to go back to Barbican after hearing anything recorded in that spectacular acoustics.

The bass is a bit lacking, otherwise this is a fantastic recording all round, I like it very much, one of the better LSO's stuff.

Bear in mind that both magazines are British like the Orchestra and the venue and that Gramophone in particular has a reputation (well-deserved) for mind numbing parochialism and favoritism. I haven't heard any LSO live titles in a long time, other than the Faure and Berlioz Requiems discs, which were recorded outside the Barbican.

The idea that a recording of music of both emotional storm and majestic tone painting can be anything other than subjective is a very contentious one. What are your comparisons? Why not try using the phrase "this is my favorite...." or just say "this bowled me over". Anyway, sorry to carp.

My personal preference is for Kempe (DVD-A)(which I still have) and Karajan (RBCD)(which I used to have). One recording of the Alpine is enough for me.

I have both Requiems as well as M8 with Gergiev, all recorded in cathedral and sound great on my stereo system.

It pales when compared to Karajan, Sinopoli, or Theilemann as a performance, and the sound is merely good.

I've enjoyed these two on sacd Strauss: Alpine Symphony, Macbeth - Janowski, Strauss: Eine Alpensinfonie - Shipway and have disposed of the turgid Strauss: Alpine Symphony, Der Rosenkavalier - Thielemann (almost everything I've heard from Thielemann strikes me that way so just consider it a blind spot). I think the Shipway recording is terrific, but some here haven't liked it because they think the organ isn't sufficiently present (plus it's electronic). "Professional" reviews have been uniformly excellent. Nonetheless I still treasure the Kempe/Dresden version on DVD-A.
