Exceptions are on both sides of course. Hi-end audio domain is full of stubborn persons persuaded of their own unshakeable truths.

You make a good point to purchase this disc and Ralph said he likes it so that's two pluses.

I certainly agree with your statement above. I find it so much easier, less stressful, etc, to remain open to others rather than closed. Especially on an internet hobby site.

I will listen to UK today at work on my Tidal to see if I like the music cuz the disc quality sounds good.

And Markie, it comes in those little boxes. Am think of buying Danger Money as well: U.K. - Danger Money.

Glad to hear they're from the Abbey Road masters. I'm not yet a member at QQ so I can't access the thread but it did come from the band member who wants to remix into 5.1 which UK would be a natural for.

GREAT sounding SHM~SACD, BTW!

Ralph, did you also say on another thread you got the Free, SHM SACD's?

How are they?

Looks like all kinds of versions at CDJapan, SHM SACD, SHM CD, Platinum SHM CD.

Looks like only three are SHM SACD.

Free: Free Live!

Free: Tons of Sobs

Free: Free

Concerning Abbey Road Researchers......those original master tapes were final stereo masters from which they made production tapes in order to distribute them to vinyl factories. Those second production tape copies were heavily used for repress the vinyl reissues (L@@K AT DISCOGS.COM FOR POPULAR ARTISTS) and usually for initial CD pressings (which is documented by heavy tape hiss on some early CD releases of older PROG bands).

The so-called REMASTERS dated from mid nineties till now are artificially "cleaned" material (when PC audio oriented applications would readily available to sound engineers) using those production tapes until some fine musicians and entusiasts pointed on this obnoxious pratice of Great Five (big recording companies) which boosted loudness war. Hopefully this war is now over since recently released editions have very good dynamics (Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain salad Surgery flat transfer and Trilogy flat transfer) thanks to Steven Wilson who demonstrated his hate to lossy formats - eg. destroying the original dynamics of music on his Insurgentes video documentary.

So we can buy new releases of our favourite music with greater confidency. It needed to be said, that such attempts should be done right from the start of the digital music era. Nevertheless due to some very bad CD treatments we can listen to SA-CDs DVD-As and BD-As which were intentionally invented in order to archive and produce carriers of better resolution than Red Book standard - looking forward to 384/32-bit (DXD) resolution (I know that it is already here for some yeears, but not widely comercially - and I also know of all the few BD-As containing DXD format) which must not materialize as physical discs.

But it is another story - see my future post under DACs thread.

EJ did state on his forum that the SACD's were as far as he was aware taken from 16 bit masters. He didn't know for sure. Also, as he is promoting new hi-res masters he is proposing to produce he was probably downplaying the integrity of the SACD's. However, it should be pointed out that the SACD's include bonus tracks, which as far as I am aware have never existed in a digital form before. It would seem reasonable that they were transferred at the same time as the master tapes as they were probably found when the masters were located. Also, would universal lie about the integrity of the source of these discs in the liner notes. The Japanese are known for their integrity and I am sure they wouldn't mislead buyers of these expensive packages.

My only misgiving about the source of the U.K. recordings is that CDJapan states features 'latest digital mastering' as opposed to 'DSD transfer from the original UK analogue tapes' which has been the norm for more recent Universal SHM~SACDs.

Two of my very favorite 5.1 multichannel recordings are from 16 bit masters: Donald Fagen's The Nightfly and Dire Straits: Brothers In Arms (Both available as DVD~As and SACDs).

Concerning bonuses on U.K. albums

Some of the 45RPM versions were included on "Parisien Rendezvous" double CD-bootleg (I own). Mind That Night after Night also contains 1 track When Will You Realize aside from another two tracks that has not been published elsewhere.

EJ was not involved in the production of the SHM-SACD's so How could he know about the source used for this releases is a mystery to me.

He also speaks about another "definitive" boxset here:
http://www.zealotslounge.com/ejs-notes

I would like to see it happen but I do not think there is a market for such release unless it is very expensive one!
