Performance:   Sonics:
13 tracks/ 1968/ 52 minutes

Those who know Free's music from the early 70;s and their massive hit All right now (Fire and ice album) might be very surprised at how they sounded in 1968. Think Cream with a hint on early Led Zeppelin. This album is extremely heavy, bluesy...........almost acid rock. The music is totally raw and guttural. Just the way fans of this music like it.

There are three bonus tracks the last of which is not any cut included on the original album. The other two cuts are alternate version of cuts on the album. All three are a good listen.

The sound is powerful and open with good transparency. There is good separation of instruments but this is not recorded to be a sweet sounding disc. It is extremely gritty, dense and energetic. This is considered a really good rock recording.........especially for late 60's period. Don't expect luster or much polish with the sound. Just expect raw energy and potent hard rock music. I'm trying to say the sound on this shm sacd is excellent for what it gives us and what its supposed to be. Vocals are very good with terrific presence and the guitar playing is top notch. Think early Jimmy Page a lot of the time. I have no complaints with the sound and am happy to have purchased this shm sacd.

Highly recommended with good mastering.

Play it loud at your own risk. But it needs to be played loudly.

My actual score is 4 and a quarter stars for sound.
