I was too impatient to wait for the UK release of this SACD in September, so I purchased the download from eclassical. Particularly keen to hear the horn concerto, but the theremin piece was a pleasant surprise - I was impressed at how well the instrument integrated with the sound of the orchestra in such a natural way. Incidentally, I wonder whether eclassical or other download sites are planning to provide BIS recordings in 5.1 FLAC? As things stand my impatience has cost me, since I'll probably end up buying the SACD too so that I can enjoy it in multichannel..

This maybe not the Forum for that, but, yes, eClassical will offer 5.0. It is a priority.

Great! For the moment I only buy older recordings as downloads that are not available as SACD. This may change then.
By the way, would it be possible to offer ALAC, too, like Hyperion does? Would be nice for iTunes people.

Same with me, Aho is one of my favourite contemporary composers and I too mainly downloaded it for the horn concerto. I have to confess the instrument Theremin was not even in my active vocabulary before this release.
I have never liked electronic music or even elecrically amplified instruments.
But although I prefer the horn concerto, which imho is yet another masterpiece by Aho, I am fascinated by some of the sounds both he and the amazing young woman playing it can conjure up.
At times I felt as being back in the rainforest with gibbons calling and all sorts of other natural sounds in the air.

But the Theremin also sounds more than a bit "electronic" and artificial compared both to the wonderfully rich and also subtle string sounds that both harmonize and contrast with it.
Definitely worth hearing.
But the horn concerto which not only reminded me of Siegfried and Fafner more than once, is the work I have played most from this very interesting release.
Aho is really a master of sonorities "ein echter Klangkomponist" I would say.
And it is always wonderful to indulge in his magical soundworld.
And this time around I have nothing but praise for the engineering too. Rich and warm and full 24/96 SQ with the solo horn very naturally and atmospherically balanced in a good acoustic. And both admirably played by the Lapland orchestra and brilliantly conducted by Storgårds.
IMO a BIS release to treasure.
Kudos to Robert and BIS for recording the music of such a great contemporary composer.

Robert, BIS releases only a portion of their recordings as multichannel SACDs, the rest as RBCDs (and stereo downloads). Of the latter group, are most also recorded in multichannel, such that there will be NEW (to SACD afficionados) mch recordings once 5.0 downloads are a reality? I, for one, would jump as a chance to hear the Balys Dvarionas violin concerto with Gluzman in surround, among many others. I had attended the Dvarionas music school in Vilnius as a youth and have a lot of fondness for the composer, mostly unknown in the West.

I am pretty sure that this is also high up on the list of to-do:s

Answer moved to the BIS thread.
