How about this set? It's the top rated disk over at QQ. Is this a must have improvement? After reading a review on Amazon, I got the impression that Guthrie's 2003 remaster is about the same. The main points of interest are the original Quad mix and various concert videos. Any other thoughts??

I read online a few years back that Parson's original QUAD (4.0) mix was available as a great sounding DVD~A download but then PF, themselves, chose Guthrie's 5.1 (over Parson's) mix for SACD release. Other than that mix (Parson's), another redundant box of goodies to clutter your domicile unless you're a 'fanatical completist."

If you are interested in hearing the Parson's mix, which is the "original" MC mix of this music, this is a must have. And sounds better than the DVD-A you refer too. The mixes are quite different from each other.

Whilst I lack my own surround I've had the opportunity to compare the Parsons 4.0 and Guthrie 5.1 tracks and yes they're quite different. And also well worth listening to. The video is well transferred with good sound, but only two tracks (Careful With That Axe, Eugene and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun) which is something of a letdown. I'd have loved the complete Brighton gig in HD.

A big draw for us fanboys though is a live 1974 performance, and another disc of outtakes and early mixes and the like. Standard RBCD transfers for both but if you want to get an idea of what tinkering and noodling went on before the final masterpiece was unleashed it's essential. My incredibly biased opinion is that all three Immersion box sets are essential for a Pink Floyd fan. As well as the DSotM and WYWH SACDs, the upcoming Division Bell box set, and whatever fully loaded special editions they may release in the future. The less insane fan may wish to be more thoughtful with their disposable income...

Wrong. 'I've been mad for f#@*ing years—absolutely years'
Noise? well technically all music is noise. We just like listening to different noise than you.:P

Does it matter?

+1

Frankly, I find DSOTM quite depressing for this very reason. This type of negative content is prevalent throughout the title.

For a better listening experience, try "Wish You Were Here".

Think of Dark Side as Pink Floyd's Requiem.........

And what happened to the SA.CD.net 'Golden Rule:' Don't criticize others listening habits?

I got a copy of this. The original Quad mix is definitely different than the 2003 mix. It is amazing to listen to it after all these years. WoW! This really brings back memories. I remember listening to this version on my brother's Quad system back in the 70s. Very happy to have it! :)

But... despite all the nostalgia, I must admit that I agree with the band... Guthrie's 2003 mix is better. Perhaps this shows that 5.1 learned some valuable lessons from Quad.

And... If we're discussing our favorite Floyd, well..you all know mine... Interstellar Overdrive. ;)

But then again, perhaps Arnold Layne... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tA73k88NU-s
