If Fischer's interpretation of the 7th brings more folks to Bruckner's music, I can only see that as a positive thing. In my case, it was Stanislaw Skrowaczewski who helped me to "get" Bruckner.

Anyway, these symphonies do seem to bring out the competitive nature in listeners.

Here's a discussion of this phenomenon. The readers' comments at the end are interesting as well.

Thanks for the link. And, in the incredibly great world of incredibly great composers, Bruckner is very great in his way, if not among the very greatest of the great. Few would argue that he belongs alongside Beethoven or Brahms or Haydn to name a few fellow symphonists. But, he has a special place in reaching my very soul in his later symphonies.

I am also eager to hear more Bruckner from our own Yannick Nezet-Seguin, who has said he puts Bruckner in a very special place he deeply identifies with, together with our superb Philadelphia Orchestra. That said, I have never heard a greater 7th than the one conducted here a number of years ago by Sir Simon Rattle and our fabulous Philadelphians. I happened to meet him the next day, and I enthusiastically shook his hand congratulating him for such a superb rendition. I doubt I will ever hear a greater performance of this great symphony than that.

No question that Bruckner, like many of the very finest things in life, is an acquired taste. He takes much longer to appreciate in one's journey through the classical repertoire. It took me years and years to get beyond my own listening and comprehension limitations to the point where I began to understand his idiom. But, once you get there, as with the music of his prime influence, Richard Wagner, it is very, very special.

I indeed admire Ivan Fischer and his BFO forces for some repertoire. I do not think interpretively they excel at everything, in spite of superb recordings on Channel Classics. But, I am nonetheless eager to get my hands on their take on the magnificent Bruckner 7th.

Bruckner lovers tend to be a niche that is very sophisticated, in the best sense, as the music is not for everyone. It takes great listening maturity to get into this music and the performances. So, it is no wonder that everyone seems to have strong preferences as to conductors and interpretations.

Well, Carl, when I visit next month, we will include that in the program. ;-)

@rosenkavalier817: Do you refer to somewhere along 14:34 and 14:55?
It's the dragon breath :)

I am so looking forward to this. The first 15 minutes (while checking for the dragon breath), I am already enjoying this. I adore Mahler and this Bruckner is superbly done, along with my Japanese Günter Wand disc.

I don't get it...

It's not an added hiss but rather the real event that's happening that got captured on the recording. Do you refer to those timeline I quoted previously?

Yes that's exactly it. What's the "real event?" Am I hearing things?

Has anyone else noticed an added hiss from approximately 14:30-15:00 in the first movement? I've listened in both mch and stereo and heard the same thing on different equipment.

Listening over headphones I hear a hiss which appears from nowhere in the first movement (approximately 14:30 to 14:58) and fourth movement (3:18 to 3:20) also an odd noise at 00:14 in the third movement and 'tick tock' noises in each movement break.

I'd assumed all the above would be present in the master files, and would be relieved to know this performance is (at least potentially) available unblemished.

Regards
Hugh

Some players make clicks at track starts, caused by imperfect software. The reason I ditched my Oppo-80. Which player/firmware do you have?

I have not heard the disk in question yet, though.

A nice review which reflects feeling some of us have expressed-- including me...

Hugh, both you and Matthew are correct; there's a hiss at the times both of you indicated. Jared discovered the problem after the first run of SACD's were produced and distributed, and did a recall. Obviously not all could be captured.

The master was corrected, and a new run of SACD's produced and distributed several months ago. If anyone who has the defective version contacts Jared at the Channel Classics address in the booklet, he will send a new corrected copy.

The edited master, which is the download on both the Channel Classics and NativeDSD sites, is without the defect.

Thanks!
