Have recently upgraded my source to the Oppo 103d and in conjunction with my Yamaha RX-V 765 have noticed a huge difference in sound to what I was receiving from my Pioneer DV565A.

I am still using my very old KEF CONCERTO speakers as my main.

Question for you far more knowledgeable hi-fi folk is what should I be looking at in terms of a speaker upgrade for my Oppo / Yamaha combination. Initially for stereo and then for 5.1

Douglas, noting that we have a number of the same titles in our libraries, I suggest that you audition the Rega RS line of loudspeakers. I recently purchased a pair of RS-5s, whose presentation I find to be both detailed and natural, especially on piano, string and vocal recordings. For MCH, a system could be assembled with a pair of RS-3s (smaller tower model), a pair of the compact RS-1s on stands, plus their center channel speaker.

Douglas, I have used Quad speakers for a few years (not the electrostatics) and have been very pleased with them in my (now) mch set up. Buy used with confidence and you will get fantastic value for money. I use 22L2 as the mains and an L2 centre. (I have a second set up with 21Ls) As I have to wall mount the surround ones I use smaller for that -actually 11L's. The great thing is that the whole range use very similar drivers so that you can mix and match without compromise. I know that the range is now discontinued but that just gives you the chance of very good second hand equipment. There are a couple of matching subs too. The L Lite series is budget end (but pretty good) and with lower power requirements. The finish is Piano lacquer and looks a million dollars. Just read some of the reviews I think these speakers are less well known in the USA but there are plenty around here and selling for less than half the original new price. Happy to let you hear mine if you were ever around Swindon. Happy hunting.

Mark and Gilbert - thank you so much for your input and recommendations which I am looking into right now. Both have great reviews.

Vandersteen 2CE Sig II's are always a solid recommendation for a very high value full range speaker ($2395/pr new - can be found used much lower). Vandy also makes complementary surround speakers should you go in that direction in the future. I love my Vandy 3A Sigs.

While on the subject of upgrades I would be interested to know what people think I would be best to upgrade first. I use an Oppo 93 via hdmi (DSD) into a Marantz
5004. Obviously the Oppo is just serving as a transport in this set up. My thinking is that the Marantz could be upgraded to the latest version which would give me better DAC processing. Upgrading the Oppo to 105D would add the possibility of using DSD downloaded files which is currently not available to me but to benefit from the better sonics of the new Oppo I would have to use analogue out of the Oppo. I use a high end amplifier for the front channels at the moment fed from the line output of the Marantz. You see my dilemna Which route route would give me a better end result?

Hi Doug,

speaker choice and placement is critical for reaching extraordinary results on playback of (highres, SACD) program material, much more critical than amplifiers , cables etc.

Siegfried Linkwitz did extensive research on speaker radiation and phantom image creation. Without being limited to conventional "box speakers" , he designed some outstanding transducers.
The whole process is important , from recording via storage to the rendering at home.
See the SF Symphony post production room picture

If you ever get a chance to listen to one of his designs, you''ll know what I mean (and experienced myself). It is 3-D music without 5.1, airy, lifelike, believable
For his achievements Linkwitz was recently honored with ALMAs "Titanium Driver Award 2014".

Cheers, Frank

If you've been happy with your current speakers, I would suggest you have a go with current KEF speakers; Q or R series would be great starting points:

Additionally, I've heard good things of these:

I've been using my current KEF Q series speakers with sub-woofer for the past 2-3 years; I'm well satisfied of them.
