I am new to this forum and glad to have found it. I am looking to replace my sony ns999es that after 11 years is no longer functioning properly. I saw that Sony has a SCD-xa5400es model for approx. $1,500 that appears to be an update of what I had. WHile I enjoyed the sound of the sony, my younger godson says that I should consider the newer OPP0 BDP 105 for newer technology and the new Marantz sa 8005 that i believe is just coming out. WOuld appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions. I am looking in the $1,500 price range. My system includes Odyssey Tempest pre-amp, Stratos amp and Lorelei speakers.
Thanks MThaus24

Definitely the OPPO BDP-105. Not only is it Universal disc (Blu-ray/DVD/SACD/DVDA/CD etc.) player, it is also a network (ethernet and wireless), DLNA compliant video and stereo/multichannel digital stream player that does not compromise on quality and is just so flexible.

Don't know much about the Marantz but from the spec it is just a SACD/CD player - does not even support DVDA disc.

If you want to playback hi-res downloads, stream movies, and watch DVDs/Blu-rays, then the Oppo is the best choice. If you simply want high-quality SACD playback, then I'd go for the Sony. I have both units--via HMDI and for two-channel recordings, I prefer the Sony. I use the Oppo for movies, streaming, and listening to solo classical instrument SACDs via its analog outs. On ensemble and symphonic music, the Oppo loses a lot of depth via the m-ch analog outs, but it sounds great for solo instruments.

Oppo 105. Though, if you'd rather save $1,000 to buy more SACDs, go with the 103 -- it's hardly different from the 105. I have zero regrets about my 103 -- it far exceeded my expectations.

If you are a music listener only the Sony 5400 still sounds more musical
If you need onher facilities such has video, bluray etc go for the Oppo.

I have compared the Sony XA5400ES and Oppo 103 at home via HDMI into the Sony STR-DA 5400ES AVR (UK version with HATS)and find the Sony XA5400ES considerably superior for both SACD & CD. As for Blu-Ray I much prefer sound & video from the Sony BDP-1000ES/ BDP-760 UK

I would steer clear of universal machines; there are, of course, those that like them, but then you know the old saying about jack of all trades, and master of none ...

There also seems to be lots of confusion with universal players with HDMI, ... not being sure whether you are actually getting pure DSD to analogue conversions, whether the machine is actually playing back via DSD or converting to PCM first, and so on. And even if it is configurable ... I really would not want such complications and uncertainties in my playback system. I still don't understand who would want to play a Blu-ray disc on their hi-fi? Makes no sense to me. Perhaps if you have your hi-fi set up next to the TV??? But then who would listen to TV over their hi-fi? Plainly, some people do, but it's not my preference.

The Marantz range have a superb reputation for hi-quality audiophile playback of hi-rez stereo ... fantastic reviews ... and the new range lets you use the SACD player as a high-quality DAC too (if you want to connect your computer as the source), so that's where I would head. I also heard one of the Luxman's recently and thought it fabulous - though it might be somewhat more expensive.

Hi Gerald, glad to have you back all forums need its favourite curmudgeon.

By the way, the old SA7 is still going strong despite being "overweight and flabby in the base" No sign of heart stopping moments there. Copper bottomed.
