Discussion: Tears - Harpsichord laments from the 17th-Century, Demeyere

Wow...this is easily one of the best harpsichord (and virginal) recordings I have ever heard. Mr. Demeyere's instruments are there in the listening room, but it doesn't sound dry and claustrophobic. It would make a fantastic disc for evaluating the mids and highs in potential new speakers. Oh yes, the music and playing are fantastic as well! :-)

Thanks for the tip, I tend to be an harpsichord fan. If it is well recorded
it can be the most realistic sound one can get on an audio system.
Musically I also like this period, and as you say from the clips I've heard it is extremely well played

There's little sense of any room ambience, but it doesn't really sound dry, either.

Thanks! Looking forward to listening to this one and... more from Demeyere and Challenge. Let's hope they continue these wonderful harpsichord recitals on SACD.

In a good system harpsichord if well recorded may could be the closest to realistic sound one can get at home. Easier to reproduce than a grand piano for sure.

I've thoroughly enjoyed every disc from Challenge. This new one is much more closely mic'd than his Flemish disc. Most of the pieces are slow and rather dark in tone, so perhaps he wanted a more intimate sound.

How would you compare the recorded sound to performances by Olga Martynova on Caro Mitis? By the way not much is coming from that label lately, hope they are still in business.

It's much crisper and more closely mic'd than the CM disc. Some may prefer the greater warmth of the latter. I'd sum the differences in perspective as one is standing on stage with the harpsichord on the Challenge disc and seated in the second row on the CM disc. Both are very pleasing, just quite different.

I like all the SACD's of Olga Martynova, the recordings are also excellent and very natural, a few months ago coming back from an harpsichord concert I put
one of Olga SACd's and was very pleased to find out that my system sounded very close to what I just heard, at the concert I was seating on the 3rd row.
I have other superb Harpsichord recordings especially from the French label
Alpha, ok they are RBCD's but sound as good as my harpsichord SACD's, the recording and the instruments are obviously the key factors
