Has anyone tried connecting a MacBook to the SA8005? If I try it get the error "Unsupported" even the owner manual says Mac is supported. If you want to try it go to Radio Shack and buy a USB Type B cable ($15.99) and let me know what happens.

I see someone posted a review on Amazon that says the same thing.

Someone needs to sue Marantz. Would be nice to get a partial refund for this non-working feature. Do they even test their own products? This is made in Japan too. If it was made in China I could understand the problem.

I've compiled page 21 & 45 for convenience...

Are you running "Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later" ? Your cable is "3m or less" and USB 2.0 ? Tried connecting with Windows comput...

Or, ask your local official Marantz' Support...

Yes (10.8.5), Yes (3 ft.) and Yes. I have that owner manual PDF.

Haven't tried a Windows computer but I do have the number and hours of operation for Marantz since Crutchfield "lifetime technical support" couldn't help me.

update: Just now tried playing WAV files from a USB flash drive. It showed the songs and allowed me to scroll through the list, so I chose a song and pressed play and all I get is the message Not Supported.

So, other than playing physical disks all this machine can really do is play music from an ipod, but I've found that my ipod is of low fidelity (good bass, but lacking any clear high frequencies). There's only so much fidelity you can get out of one of those tiny little things.

So, to summarize after spending the whole weekend trying to get this machine to do things it is advertised to do all I can say is "Total Failure". Nothing worked that I tried.

One more thing: CD Text is for some unknown reason disabled when playing CDs, but works with SACDs.

Marantz will be calling me back tomorrow, but strangely everything works fine now. Could be a bit embarrassing.

Crutch Field has a scratch and dent SA8005 for $180 off.

Did you buy that discounted one ?

Plus, just now, very belatedly, noticing your 'edited' #40 Post of asking for help to understanding DAC functionality and USB-B...

As the above pre-presentation photo shows, Ken Ishiwata too busily focuses on setting up...

And I've tried before to make aware of 'across-the-board' guide (please readers, do at least skim, Marantz or not, for a glimpse until your need for thorough understanding) :

Am glad to read that "strangely everything works fine now."

I appreciate your frankness, please keep us informed of your impressions. For I regard our own Hi-Fi products as having a lifespan, ageing alongside us, the so-called initial 'break-in' period then...

If Marantz' service call has not yet been, perhaps ask about general tips for an assured connection, best procedures, stories...

And grsimmon would like to know the release date of the NA8005...

To which https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=236173593238016 shows the German tagline "Ensemble für den perfekten Kang: NA8005 / SA8005 / PM8005"

Yes, one of them. They had several. There were no scratches or dents though, except the cardboard box had a slight dent.

If you can't get your MacBook working connected up to the Marantz SA8005 try this:

Connect USB Type A into your MacBook and USB Type B into the back of the Marantz SA8005 where it says "USB-DAC" under "DIGITAL AUDIO IN"
Make sure you have "USB-DAC" input on the Marantz.

Go to "System Preferences" on your MacBook
Then to "Sound"
Select "USB High Speed Audio"

Using "Spotlight" (click command & space bar) type in "Audio Midi Setup"
Select "USB High Speed Audio"
Format should be "192000.0 HZ"

Now try streaming something from the internet and "USB: Unlock" should change to "USB: 192K"

You should not have to go through the above process again each time you use it.

I hope this helps.

If seeing (and reading) gets one closer... Above, for example, is Page 5, where :
"Standard media players such as iTunes and Windows Media Player do not support bit-perfect transmission.

That's why we recommend players like jRiver Media Center 18 for PC (Mac is in beta testing phase) and Audirvana (time being Mac only). Other software media players are available on the market, but we like to focus on these two for now as they support not only PCM-Signals but DSD streaming via DoP as well."

Well, to maximise the value of our purchases (and time) we need to know (and purchase... ?

What ??

Let's share our experiences using Audirvana, jRiver, NA-11S1, SA8005...

Here's a strange thing that happened. I had my MacBook Pro plugged in playing music through the USB DAC and the MacBook battery went dead after several hours since I hadn't bothered to plug it into AC. After starting it back up all the music played at what must have been half-speed. Didn't matter if I used the JRiver product or iTunes. I wonder how it even does that. I had to turn off the Marantz, then turn it back on to get things back to normal.

Discovered a new trick today. Play the multi-channel versions on SACDs by pressing the Sound Mode button on the remote. Comes in handy with those Doors SACDs, two of which I still need to order (the first two).
