I'm looking to upgrade my SACD player, and have been doing research for one. I'm considering the Marantz SA-11S3 or a used Denon DCD-A100 as my top choices. Does anyone have experience with these two players? I would consider the Sony 5400ES but it doesn't have digital input for use as a DAC. Are there others I should be considering? (I'm ok with considering used equipment) I mainly listen to classical and jazz music, but also classic rock, and others as the mood strikes. I mostly listen through headphones (Sennheiser HD600 through a tube headphone amp) and through B&W 805D via a Denon receiver (will upgrade that soon too). Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I meant B&W 805D.

I suggest the Oppo 105...it has state of the art DACS, can play pretty much any file, and sounds great! Also, one of the DACs directly drives the headphone output.

I am totally delighted with my Marantz SA-11S3. It is much better than by previous Esoteric player.

Although the OPPO 105 is an excellent player for all its capabilities, I found it lacked character and just didn't do it for me sonically. Some might prefer a clean, neutral sound, but I prefer something that makes my toes tap. Accordingly, I recently downgraded OPPOs to the new 103D, bought a Monoprice HDMI De-embedder* and a Lavry DA11 DAC.

The result is nothing short of a triumph! SACDs now sound very exciting, even though there's a DSD>PCM conversion. This ability to get me involved and excited about music is something my old OPPO 105 just couldn't do. Is my system up to audiophile standard? I dunno, but it sure as hell is boogiephile standard :)

* The Monoprice strips hi-res PCM off HDMI and outputs it as 24/88.2 via Coaxial RCA, which my Lavry then converts to analogue. For this to work, I need to set the OPPO to convert DSD>PCM. The audio flow is:

OPPO (HDMI)>Monoprice (Coaxial)>Lavry (phono)>Amp>Speakers

So shall we assume that a dirty, colored sound makes your toes tap?

Pretty funny, Kal. I haven't auditioned any of the equipment Windhoek mentions in his post, but I understand what he is talking about. Clinical sound does not make a musical connection. Of course, one man's meat is another man's poison, as they say.

I currently listen to music using the Apogee Duet as a DAC. Would I hear improvement using the Marantz SA-11S3 DAC instead? (or the Denon dcd-A100 for that matter?)

There's an app for that:

For low fi lovers. Musically involving, however, does not equate for most folks to low fi, exceot, of course, for vinyl fans, who apparently can be aided by this software when using a digital source. Outrage to follow.

I really question the need for the OPPO 105 for my uses. I have a new Denon 4520ci receiver and with that I think the 103 is enough. I, too, am looking to upgrade. Should I wait until next Winter for the eventual Oppo new models, Kal?
