The review says it all: Nice job by Bruckner on this one.

Not really: It's dangerously close to the single sentence sin.

Wait to you hear the Fischer BFO Channel out January.

Personally, I have a problem with these overpriced Japanese stereo-only SACDs of a work like the Bruckner 7, when there are many excellent alternatives for less than 1/2 the price of the Jochum. The Kreizberg/Vienna Symphony, for instance; or Blomstedt/Leipzig Gewandhaus; or Haitink/Chicago, just to mention three. Does Jochum have something so special to say in this symphony to justify the outlay? IMO, no...but your mileage may vary, of course!

Lets see how Fischer handles Bruckner, I definitely love to hear that version knowing that the audio will definitely be uncompressed, once one hears Mahler/Bruckner uncompressed its hard to go back to vinyl era recordings no matter how distinguished a performance !!!

Unless, of course, you value a fantastic Brucknerian, i.e., Jochum, if when compared to the 3 you mention can be determined to be head and shoulders above them all in regards to performance. A modern recording does not always equal a reason to buy it. Some recordings are classics for a reason.

Agreed!

Nice job by Jochum and the Berliners, too!!

Of course this is a specialty item. No argument there. We are fortunate that there are several good recordings of Bruckner's symphonies to choose from on SACD... and more reasonably priced.

But.. I must say that this is a beautiful performance and... remastering. According to the information printed in Japanese, the original analogue master tapes were remastered directly to DSD. (Maybe someone could confirm that.)

Either way... This SHM-SACD offers those who dearly remember and appreciate Eugen Jochum a chance to once again be awe-inspired by this maestro's magic. Jochum had a special feeling for Bruckner's music.

Worth every yen, dollar, euro, pound... IMO.

It's hard to see how it could beat the Blomstedt/Leipzig Gewandhaus recording on SACD.

Kreizberg maybe, but I would place Jochum below Haitink as a Bruckner conductor, roughly on a par with Blomstedt. Too many accelerandi which undermine the structure, which he bizarrely advises against in the notes to his EMI cycle.

Haitink's 1977 Philips version of the Seventh would be ideal on SACD!

I would love to see a Direct DSD remastered Haitink/Concertgebouw cycle on SACD... along with the Jochum cycle. ;-)

Speaking of older recordings, I recently picked up and have been enjoying Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 - Rogner. (Yes, it's another specialty item from Japan.). This and Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 - Rogner are analogue recordings taken in the former East Germany during the 80s. I wish avex-Classics would have also gotten the 5, 6, 8 and 9th of this series on SACD.
