In my review of the Trattado de Glosas by Diego Ortiz, I raised the question whether Savall's 1970 first recording of the piece was the world premiere recording. I have since learned that the first recording had been done two years before.
In 1968 the Spanish Ministry of Education commissioned Marcial Cervera and Christiane Jaccottet to record "Música para viola da gamba de Diego Ortiz" and the recording was released as MEC 1002 in the magnificent library-quality set of LPs called Colección Monumentos históricos de la música española. (When I was in Spain in 1980 I picked up a copy of the companion volume on the Cantigas de Santa Maria and carried it triumphantly home. It is truly a work of art.)
There have been four subsequent recordings of the Trattado de Glosas:
1970 Savall
1977 Paniagua
1990 Savall (now on SACD)
1998 Bettina Hoffman (now on Brilliant CD)
I am now preparing a review of the SACD disc called "Ad Vesperas" with music of Diego Ortiz. It forms an excellent companion to the Trattado de Glosas disc.

Thanks for the information Joseph. I have this on order and am looking forward to it greatly. Hard to imagine it could be of the quality of the Ad vesperes disc, which is easily one of my top 20 classical HD discs (out of over 2000) but if it is that'd be brilliant.

There is another recording (not SACD) of music from the Tratado de Glosas 1553 and the Musices Liber Primus 1565, issued on the Japanese label ALM Records in 2010: ALCD-1118

The title is: Elegancia de Ornamentacion en Renacimiento, and the programme and musicians are directed by the Japanese Jordi Savall viola da gamba disciple, Masako Hirao. It includes some vocal polyphony too, with apparently some of Ortiz's glosas sung by the excellent choir. A very enjoyable recording, indeed.

I agree.

I just got the disc in the mail yesterday. I had forgotten how incredibly short the playing time is: 49 minutes only - which is a bit disappointing even at mid-price and with the re-mastering. A pity Alia Vox did not combine it with another appropriate Savall recording of Spanish music. However, this is the only quibble I have with it, but I have not had a chance yet to listen to it. I am looking forward to this very much!
