This series ... perhaps like ALL the Bach cantatas series ... has its ups and downs. The best are outstanding, and the poor ones are not worth keeping. The same happens even with the Gardiner BLACK series ... perhaps moreso with Gardiner because the latter uses live recordings.
In any event, Kuijken vol 17 ... and especially the opening BWV 186 ... is, I think, one of the highlights of the series. BWV 186 is vastly superior to Gardiner's version of same (Gardiner vol 4) ... both in performance which is lively, exciting and fugal here ... and in the clarity of the sonics.
I understand the whole Kuijken series is 24 bit 48 kHz (stereo and 5.0) ... even so, the sonics are incomparably better than the CD quality of the Gardiner ... and achieve a wonderful transparency and clarity via the use of one-voice per part, which is very successful here.
