Interesting. Despite the negative reviews regarding sound, 9 out of 11 recommend this. I guess what this means is that, despite our sometimes falling into the 'sound only' trap, in the end, it is the music that counts. I suspect many of us (including yours truly) still succumb to the temptation to buy certain RBCDs, despite the sound ... :)

I noticed a similar thing with Bruce Springsteen: Live in New York. I wouldn't buy that one based on the poor reviews of its SQ. But it got 9 out of 9 recommendations. And... When I checked the reviews on amazon, I was surprised to see 119 people gave it 5 STARS!!

But the product in question was the RBCD (under review) and NOT the OOP SACD. If you want a dose of the Boss (Springsteen) and have a BD player, do what I did and opt for the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live at Hyde Park. 173 minutes in duration and from the reviews 5 stars for the video and 5 for the LPCM 5.1 lossless soundtrack and 5 stars for the performance ( I just placed an order for that).

More logical, IMO, than paying $127 for the OOP SACD! And if you're not a video buff.....turn off the monitor and enjoy the non~stop audio stream.

When these domestic Jazz SACD reissues were still selling for between $10~15, I purchased the entire set from Concord Records and never looked back, Lunna. With my newer Marantz SACD player, they sound just fine and the music.....well it does speak for itself. I'm sure the later reissued SHM~SACD single layered discs sound better but I really saw no need to duplicate the existing titles I already had in my colleection.

Crazy that the OOP Wes Montgomery SACD is being sold for $599 @ Amazon (new)! In that case, I'd opt for the SHM~SACD...which, now, according to CDJapan is also OOP! But I'm sure it's still available from some vendors. Just checked with Acoustic Sounds and they have a copy in stock (SHM~SACD) for $60 (with a 10% off extended labor day sale going on through tomorrow).

Only a few of the Fantasy SACDs offer the best available (digital) sound for these albums, mainly those titles which have not been reissued many times before (Gil Evans, Eric Dolphy).

But where a DCC or XRCD reissue exists, it usually has better mastering than the SACD, sometimes by a wide margin. In most cases, even the early OJC CDs sound better than the SACD. Also with his CD masterings (Keepnews Edition, etc), engineer Joe Tarrantino was rarely able to improve over the previous CD version.

I guess those ready to pay collector's prices for these SACDs just assume a SACD must sound better than a CD, but for those vintage recordings, it's the mastering that matters most.

The reviews have something to do with the album's status as the greatest jazz guitar studio recording of all time. However, we have to accept that the analogue source for the digital reissues is highly flawed-- there will be no truly audiophile SACD reissue of this material.

One of the wonders of this record is that Tommy Flanagan plays as well on it as Wes does.

+1

:)

I only have Wes on LP...not on SACD yet. Actually, I have been slow to get jazz on SACD, but in the past couple of years I have discovered how wonderful it sounds on SACD as well. Wes brings me back home again in Indiana... or is that Jim Nabors? ;-)
