Discussion: Holst: The Planets - Albrecht

An exceptionally good review, and thank you. Like all fair reviews it portrays the positive and negative sides. In line with the review I am convinced not to buy the product. It is for organ - a total negative. There is a basic 'rule' to my mind with transcriptions, and it is this: you should only go 'up the scale'. The 'Scale' in my humble opinion is this, taking it from the top: (1) The human voice, (2) stringed instruments, (3) everything else. Why would anyone purchase a 'downgrade' from FULL ORCHESTRA to organ? As an aside I am disappointed to learn that Holst had an interest in Astrology. What sort of ding-dong could possibly think that inanimate objects light years away could influence their lives?

I don't believe in astrology, but I do believe there's lots of things far beyond our ken that exist, and a lot of what sounds flaky really isn't, even if ultimately, it doesn't pan out. The trick in all cases is to try one's best to keep an open mind.

Humans have always been fascinated by the heavens. And our imagination seems to be almost as boundless.
C.S. Lewis based The Chronicles of Narnia on a bit of astrology as well.

Astrology... Hmm... who knows? ;-) Anyway, it makes for a wonderful adventure story and great music.
And.. Holst himself seems to have had second thoughts about astrology:

Finally, here's Albrecht performing Mars. Sounds fantastic IMO!!

I agree: excellent review of this magnificent recording. John Miller speculates on how Hans-Jörg Albrecht manages without a (named) assistant. Regarding his earlier, and equally wonderful, Wagner Ring SACD, Herr Albrecht disclosed that he used multi-track recording to allow performance of all of the parts by himself. Although this is a technique seen most frequently in pop music recordings, it certainly works -- with convincing musical results, IMO -- in these instances. The technical quality of the Oehms SACD multichannel recording is indeed state-of-the-art and breathtaking.

Thanks for the info about Albrecht using himself as a "partner"; I had wondered if OEHMS had used a technological answer to the problem, I couldn't detect the result. The smooth transitions within the pieces were outstanding. Probably some combinations were planned and executed by the MIDI capabilities of the console. His Wagner disc is on my list for review shortly.
