. . . the thing is, when comparing 2 channel SACD (Denon 2900) and redbook CD (Nad C542) I actually prefer the redbook version. All cables are the same and have even changed inputs on the Nad pre-amp to ensure equal testing. I have a couple of SACD's and similar CD's that when testing I can time align and switch back and forth between formats when listening. The resolution and detail seems better with the redbook cd's played on the C542. I am yet to do likewise with DVD-A, though I sense the result is similar except maybe when the 2 channel versions are in 192khz/24bit resolution.

I actually felt quite disappointed when I discovered this though I do still really enjoy hi-res surround - it just does something that works for me.

What's the story here? Do I need to spend many thousands to really get the most from these formats?

What happens when you listen to SA-CD and RBCD on the same player ? I've made many comparisions using the same player, and with identical material, the SA-CD version was allways superior. I've also head guests favour the SA-CD version without knowing what had been changed.

The cd layer is a definite improvement over the stereo SA-CD layer on my Denon 2900. Funny, I've only recently noticed this as I have had the unit for around 18 mths. Redbook Cd's sound better again on the C542 and one would expect, that even using a better CD player, SA-CD should sound better regardless - unless, maybe, we are talking very high priced, very high end cdp's. I am wondering now if there is some problem with the player. The reviewers raved (5 stars) how good this machine was for SACD and DVD-A, yet CD playback was considered reasonable (4 stars). I think I shall take some titles into my dealer and do the same comparison on Denon's 3910 or such. I hope for the future of SA-CD in our house that this is a problem with my machine and not the status quo.

The sound quality/definition improves playing the titles in surround but still not a night and day difference. Thanks for your reply MDT, btw, what is your player?

From what's reported from CES 2006, Sony & Philips is renewing effort to push SACD to the masses via their HTIB products and DVD players. I wish I can say the same for their effort to push SACD software content.

HTIB - Home Theater In A Box. Basically it's a junky receiver with a subwoofer and five equally junky speakers. Avoid at all costs.

Unless that is all one can afford - it will still sound far better any comparable CD system for the same money and it is the sort of system we should be advocating to popularise SACD for those who are not in a position to spend 4 figure's for a system or even per item. It may not be great but it is far from the junk that is all too frequently passed off as Hi-Fi (sic).

Yes neither "effort" nor "push" are words one could confidently use in relation to these companies and SACD software, yet they expect people to queue up for new hardware ????????

I'm affraid that's no longer up to them. Philips Classics was swallowed by Universal (worst thing that could have happened to us consumers, Polyhmnia, founded by former Philips people, shows where the label could have gone to) and Sony Music was merged with BMG.

I strongly doubt that. A carefully assembled CD system at the same price will be superior to HTIB and with todays prices that CD player may just as well include SA-CD stereo playback. Multichannel should be regarded as an ad lib bonus after having assembled a stereo system capable of reproducing the full dynamic- and frequency range of SA-CD or DVD-A. What's the use of HTIB's 5.1 channels if every single one of them cant even fully reproduce the quality of RBCD. (You'de be surprised what can be goten of a RBCD)

I think a 5.78 through the 3.99 machine 200, minutes 1 in a 22 second would be far better as a converter for the 9900 pleasure mashine as deviced by Gordon Makepiece in his thesus 5 + no undies is the same as very high fidelity indeeed. Close encounters to the most intimate kind. Hooray.
