The rear channels are for ambience only.

If you have a DSP mode on your pre/pro then engaging it on the 2 channel DVD~A will basically give you a similar effect.

... not exactly, as DSPs often use phase addition or, more often, phase substraction in order to separate dephasing (left/right), phasing (center) and antiphasing (rear). Though often nice and convincing, this is quite artificial compared to the real MC stuff.

I have 4 chesky discs this ones made in 2000. does not say anything like the 3 older 1998 discs . those say can only be played in dvd=a and advanced audio players.this one is a regular cd recorded in 96/24. how did they do that. on dvd audio playback it says cd on display. but hdmi to denon say pcm 88.2hz. any way it recorded at a church. I thought it was a dvd but its not. it says hi rez tecnology 96/24 but looks like a regular cd case and disc

Chesky made a number of DVD~As before they embraced SACD. CDs are NOT 96/24 ..... they are DVD~As!
Chesky also released some DVDs with 96/24 pcm soundtracks (DVD~V with 96/24 pcm, that is).

And yes, they were in regular CD cases except for the DVD~Vs which came in full size DVD cases.

Now Chesky only offers digital downloads.......they've abandoned DVD~A and SACD altogether.

Technically, you are absolutely correct. Via DSP, out of phase information will be directed towards the rears. Sometimes it can be "surprising" in that not only a expanded soundfield can be achieved but also some distinct rear channel activity which can add to the sonic experience.

And then there are those times when a plain stereo recording sounds better in stereo with the DSP mode disengaged.

Experimentation is always FUN, IMO.

ben, I don't have that particular disc but the ones I do have state DVD on the back cover and only playable on DVD~A players.

They do NOT play in regular CD players.

Unless your disc is mis~labeled.

A quick check at AmazonUS lists the bar code as B00005MJ44 and the cover distinctly states DVD~Audio (6 channel) and is currently going for $523 NEW and $500 used from Amazon's third party vendors.

You most probably have the RBCD as Chesky did release it in that format, as well as DVD~A and SACD.

Just go on AmazonUS, under MUSIC type in Christy Baron: steppin' and you'll see ALL three configurations.

yes it is the regular cd. I did not know the denon upscales regular cds to 88.2hz. so I tried another cd. said 88.2 again. I was looking in the manual.it says the al24 processing does it. theres an osd on the remote for on screen that shows the rez.It has 7 other screens after that. but I know nothing about those other screens. this amp is real complicated. but it works fine.
