Not I regret my experience at all. Whilst having few qualms about the solo parts of the Korngold concerto, Miss Steinbacher's performance of the Bruch leaves more to be desired in terms of artistic expression and emotional projection. The support orchestra playing is adequate but not first class and in my set-up the sound-stage is often muddy and congested in full ensemble passages and crescendo. With smaller section playing periods all is fine.

In places the orchestral sound seems bloated as if the hall acoustic was over-loaded but surely not? In places also there seems too much reverb has been applied.

It is cautiously recommendable but not the lady's finest hour.

Hmmm

This makes a controversy. I listened to it once and need more time to confirm my initial opinion. But I remember being mesmerized by the solo playing in the second movement. That formed my opinion, which needs to be confirmed by repeated exposure, that Steinbacher's is the most noble and powerful reading I ever heard of the Bruch#1

I think it'll have to be really extraordinary to supplant the Gluzman recording in my affections, but I'm anxiously awaiting the disc to find out. Whatever the case for the Bruch I really ordered thisfor the Korngold, a guilty pleasure if ever there was one, and which I'm sure will be more faithfully recorded and less histrioncally performed that the Anne Sophie Mutter version on DG.

The Korngold can be performed unhistrionically?

Sure, that's why I'm waiting for the original instrument version played senza vibrato, LOL. Seriously, though, compare Mutter on sacd with Hahn on dvd and you'll see what I mean. It's been years since Mutter's done anything that isn't over the top, the Korngold being almost chaste in comparison to the coupled Tchaikovsky.

I agree with that Bill and we saw him perform it live in Bournemouth last Wednesday with his old disc pal maestro59 at the controls...

Sublime, absolutely sublime... it led to my comment on another thread that the Bruch has qualities evidently best heard in the concert hall. Mr Gluzman is very much the rising star.
