Glad to help :) As far as headphone amps go, it's your money and your ears that are important, so if music from the OPPO's headphone output gets your toes tapping, that's all that matters. I think the OPPO will work quite well with lower impedance headphones, but in my case, I already had my NJC amp and HD800s before I bought the OPPO and sadly discovered the OPPO wasn't up to the job. I really wanted it to, but hey ho, there you go.

The headphone output is fed directly from the DAC where DSD-Analogue takes place. When you play an SACD and listen via headphones, you are hearing DSD direct to analogue - there is no PCM step down. I can't remember how I know this, I might have read it on another forum or had correspondence with OPPO, but I do know this to be the case. This was one of the reasons I bought the OPPO.

It turns out though, that my existing headphone amp (an NJC Audio Monitor II) does a better job of driving my HD800s, so I don't use the OPPO's headphone output. If anyone wants their headphones to reach their potential, consider using a dedicated headphone amp.

Anyway, if in doubt, you could always drop OPPO an email for confirmation, but I'd sure it's DSD>Analogue.

There is much more to good sound than just good DACs, though you might not know it from online posters. When it comes to headphones, it is quite possible that the Oppo will not drive some as well as others. So, the mantra of less is better, even with headphones, is not necessarily true. You might need a good amp with some, but not with others.

I agree with both Derek and Carl its all subjective. I have no option with my ears, they are the only pair that I have, maybe some day there will be implants, everything built in.

Indeed, it's not the specs that count most, what it sounds like and whether it gets toes tapping is imo, what it's all about :)

I'm considering a pair of Byerdynamic T1 headphones, which are rated at 600 ohms. Has anyone tried these phones with the 105? If so, how well do they work? I have have pair of Byerdynamic DT 770 phones, which are also rated at 600 ohms, and my 105 drives them with no problems. I love my Stax system, but I'd like a good sealed headphone, too.
