Allan, thank you for that. I very much appreciate your comments, and regret that for various reasons I will be unable to contribute any more reviews.

Please don't let some grumpy comments put you off. But I know how you feel. Some of my ratings for the sound of some Membran discs came under a lot of attack which I took a bit personally, when the critics ignored the fact that most of the membrans that I had reviewed had also been reviewed by other people and in every such case the other reviews gave sound ratings either in line with or actually higher than mine. The trouble with discourteous comments is that they invite a response which takes away the whole pleasure and enjoyment from the process so I havent done any reviews since. Life's too short.

Peter,
I echo Allan's comments. I hope that you will (both) re-consider your decisions not to add more reviews.
The rudeness of Edvin, and before that Viktor, with regard to other people's posts simply shows the rest of us what sad angry people they are.
Please do not let such damaged individuals drive you away and spoil the enjoyment of this site for the majority of contributors.

No, no, it's not the insults from Edvin; they're beneath contempt. Nor should you take personally any of the unpleasantness over the Membran discs; as you say, life's too short. Otherwise I'd be wondering whether Windsurfer meant that anyone who produced a wish list for SACDs (myself included) is an idiot, or whether it's only the unfortunate critic from Stereophile! :-)

By the way, I see you're in London - today's Times "Sounds" supplement is well worth reading, if only for Geoff Brown's comments on Rimsky's Scheherazade.

Castor, thanks for your comments. My decision not to add more reviews is simply due to an inability to review. If I may I'll stick to waffling in the forum. (Sounds like a village in the Cotswolds?)

I think you are prima donnas almost all of you. You simply cannot take any sort of critisism.

I started a debate on the ratings system and immediately I heard from Windsurfer that the topic was pointless, and later from the same person that I hadn´t even heard the sacd´s in question. To my ears that is insulting.
And then Peter came along as always with his whining.

If you read my reviews you will find that they are full of love for music and recorded sounds.

Also Windsurfer, why do you prefer the discussion forum when you publish a review of the excellent Martinu sacd?

Peter, if you find the word "silly" offensive...what world do you live in? Do you read newspapers? Watch TV, can you watch Monty Python without feeling offended - they use the word silly frequently.
Silly is a mild word indeed and I think that when you call me arrogant for using it, it says more about you than me.

The topic Silly sonic ratings wasn´t chosen in order to ridicule one person, it was used in order to start a debate on the ratings system. I have explained this many times, but some of you refuse to read or listen. It is easier to call me arrogant. It is easier to accuse me of not having heard the sacd´s.

You mention the "unpleasantness over the Membran discs"..see, if someone disagree it is labelled as unpleasantness (I didn´t participate in that since I haven´t heard a single Membran sacd). But again, as soon as someone disagrees the hounds are let loose.

Just like this one; I quote:

"Boléro...what can I say. This is a crap review since I cannot be bothered to listen to it. I wish it was never written, or that they could have used the old agent series device...this score will destruct itself within ten seconds after being performed."

:))

Dear Edvin,
when you wrote 'silly', as in 'silly sonic ratings', did you mean, 'motherfucking'? I hear this last word in Hollywood movies all the time, ( except when the plot consists solely of extremely wealthy white people talking amongst themselves ), so doubtless it is an accepted term in global English. By the way, as this is an Australian sourced website, the phrase 'hounds are let loose' should be replaced by, 'the boxing kangaroos are itching for a fight', or, 'the wombats have come home to roost'.

In an earlier post, it was not a motherfucking idea on my part when I suggested you post some English translations of SACD reviews from the magazine you say you edit. I am curious as to how different cultures etc respond aesthetically. Certainly, reviews from your contributors on SACDs which have generated discussion here, would be interesting in themselves, and help me understand the context in which you write.

Moreover, we know the Nordic countries are very progressive on womens' issues. In the Anglo-American press, it is customary to have young women as cover artists, and the reason I was curious as to your magazine's covers, was whether you as editor place sufficient numbers of fat balding male musicians on the front page to correct this Anglo-American imbalance.

While I'm on the topic of gender, it is interesting that while women appear to slightly outnumber men in classical music audiences, marketing statistics show women purchase more CD compilations or mood music. Advertising for these products heavily utilises words relating to emotion. On the other hand, the number of women 'audiophiles' is a terrible minority, and I wonder whether the use of technical jargon has a degree of complicity in this. Interesting that the English woman classical reviewer, Harriet Smith, seems to use terms relating to mood and emotion more liberally when recommending a disc, although there are too few women critics in the English language press to draw any statistically valid conclusions.

And of course you chose not to quote the readers who agreed. At least I had the gut to admit that the review was incomplete, and I used a far stronger word about my own review than "silly" ..and what do I get, scorn. Shame on you, Castor.

Dear ramesh,

why not "the Kiwis are out for a peck". Wombats are so cute.

We never publish women on the covers, sorry, we had Julia Fischer earlier this year. Mostly we have some nice equipment, technical that is.

Translating my articles into English, oh dear. This year I have written about Pentatone, Mahler from MTT (an extended article), Living Stereo and much else. If I find the time I will translate something.

Silly as in not quite correct in my view in a funny way. Nothing degrading, nothing arrogant.
