I wouldn't count too firmly on this. Yes, firmware upgrades have been possible for well over a decade but few hardware manufacturers actually have a policy of providing software upgrades to their installed base.

The firmware for my Denon transport was updated again just a few weeks ago. I don't know what the changes were but it's still an active product.

The buzz around DSD file capability probably hasn't escaped the attention of Japanese component manufacturers who I doubt are prepared to sit around and lose market share to standalone DACs that are, in the main, just off the shelf DAC chips that cost a few dollars in quantity in fancy boxes with even fancier pricing. Their products (those of traditional component manufacturers) are also better placed to make use of the files, especially for multichannel. As I said, all this will be clearer in time. At this time though there's little (legal) software availability and no evidence that there ever will be.

Given that the latest Pioneer receivers support DSD file input (stereo only) and DSD HDMI input (stereo and multichannel) I am hopeful that Pioneer might add full DSD file input for multichannel.

It would certainly persuade me to upgrade.

Most of the major manufacturers are at this same point now.

I asked Oppo about supporting DSD files on the BDP-93. This was their response: "Likely not. The hardware architecture is too dissimilar. Won't stop us from trying, but it is unlikely."

I find it strange that no one mentioned that every version of Sony's PlayStation 3 will play DSD Discs.

I wonder if it is multi channel or just stereo?
