I had this on backorder at Amazon (USA) for a couple of months, and just received an email that it will ship in a week. So it appears to be back in stock.

importcds.com is the best bet right now in the US as it's based here. Robert needs to get on the distributor here to get the product out.

Marketplace seller, but that's not Amazon.

Well, it's on their site...close enough for me! I think of the name Amazon as all-inclusive, regardless of who's actually selling it.

This is by the way a superb account of the 4th Symphony, certainly a candidate for best on disc but sadly not matched by his 1st.

Contrarily, this is first recording of the 1st I have really enjoyed, though I am certainly not well-versed with the work, having only heard the Decca/Boston and LSO Live Colin Davis recordings. To me Vanska sounds wonderfully fresh and fiery compared to those accounts. What is your favorite recording of the 1st?

I was so fond of the Lahti/Vänskä recording of the 90s of the 4th symphony that I thought I would not be impressed by this new one. I was wrong. It is stunning. From the very beginning you can tell this one is a keeper. The authority of the basses throws you immediately into the right mood. The rest is simply perfect.
I have listened to it a dozen times and never get enough of it. The 4th is my favorite work by Jan S and this one is the best I have listened to.
I am no expert on the first though. Others will know better.

I agree with you Vänskä's Minnesota version of the 4th is absolutely wonderful imho too. And I like the 1st just as much.

Good to know, Chris. A pity the cycle will remain unfinished. I would have liked to hear what they have got to say about the 7th, my other beloved symphony by the master. I wish you a wonderfully musical 2014. Greetings from Buenos Aires

For me the best on disc is Maazel's account with the Vienna Philharmonic that happily made its way to SACD courtesy of Esoteric. The Maazel survey from the 60's/70's was outstanding in every way; vinyl discs are costly collectors' items but it has not been remastered to SACD sadly.

Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 - Maazel
