Paranoia. I think Jared and others are charging what they think the market will bear, pure and simple. Are they correct? Probably not, but time will tell.

In general there seems a more willing attitude for audio consumers to pay for hardware production values (proven or not) than to pay for audio software production values. Only in something like Shm people are interested in the supposed quality improvement, even though they deliver nothing new.
From the start of a recording, recorded quality is a cost. And with DSD dowloads and SACD disks, the higher production values (and cost) are tempted to be upheld by the smaller labels that are in this business.
We will keep doing out best to be part of this on the recording side, and hope that audio consumers who share our passion for high quality recordings will value them as such.

By the same token, those people who are not potential DSD download customers, frankly, don't have a valid position in the conversation. They're not affected.

I would be a potential customer at a lower price, but not really affordable for me at the high prices

I agree. And with the growth and maturity of the DSD download business, those days are surely coming. Probably sooner than we think, if the introduction of DSD DAC's over the last year is any indication.

One question though you record mainly in DSD but all your hi res downloads so far are PCM. Any plans do do as Jared ie also offer the true master format ie dff where titles have actually been recorded in DSD,anytime soon?
And while I am at it. Why is only one of Janowski's pcm recorded Wagner Operas available as a hi res download?
I would buy quite a few DSD titles too if you only made them available.
I am hoping sooner rather than later.

I am obviously following this discussion with some interest. It is however up to our various clients, the labels, to decide and come with news when they have it.

Thanks for your quick response. I realize that the questions need to be adressed to Pentaman.

Hi Groot,

Has Polyhymnia recorded anything in 5.6MHz and/or 11.2MHz DSD yet? If yes, what do you think about the higher rate DSD formats? If not, do you plan using the higher rates in the future? I would really appreciate your input on this.

Well, as always, the question is how much more, isn't it? Quality inevitably bears a premium, but at some point the premium is too high and squelches demand. Obviously, there is a significant market for high quality audio, but my impression is that demand is, in general, fairly elastic, except as to a small segment willing to pay luxury pricing.

Hmm. Only three times the amazon hard-copy price. Bargain!

Isn't that good news? It encourages people to buy the SACD and helps keep the physical format going.
