Not much needs be said about the artistic merit or historical importance of Poco's seminal "Pickin' Up the Pieces." I think it's pretty safe to say that the genre we've come to know as country-rock would not sound as it does without it. I think "landmark" is a pretty apt desciption of the LP.

Honestly, I was pretty surprised that Audio Fidelity chose to release it. Happy as hell, of course, but a little shocked. Some of the company's release choices have been pretty suspect, if not outright baffling, IMHO. But I'm hardly complaining. "Pickin' Up the Pieces" has deserved a first-class mastering on digital for a long, long time. BGO's two-fer from years ago that contains the album isn't bad at all, but this is now clearly my go-to version.

The SACD sounds amazingly open and detailed, and the harmonies are sweet and full. Unlike some, I'm not fond of everything Steve Hoffman does, but I think he got it right this time. The album probably sounds the best I've ever heard it in my room. It's really a great job. At times, I thought it might be a little bright in spots, and perhaps it is, but maybe that's on the master tape. Who knows? Regardless, it's not anything I consider at all serious.

For anyone looking to pick up a great-sounding digital version of this landmark recording, methinks this is the one to get.

Poco was a band that didn't make it until the late 70's and by then most of the founding members were long gone to other more successful bands...Like the Eagles. Poco was the first band, I believe that mixed country and rock and they did influence bands like the Eagles and countless others. So essentially we have a mixture of country/folk and rock here.

Their music might not be everybody's cup of tea but it is good. Especially if you have more thAn two or three of their works to listen to.

Steve Hoffman mastered this sacd and he did a very excellent job here. I am a fan of his work but I have to say that lately over the last bit when Audio Fidelity returned to the Sacd market.....well I haven't been blown away at all. His earlier sacd efforts were awesome but I feLt like he fell short on other titles.

Not here and not with his other releases like America. Here on this disc he did a very excellent job with tapes that are more than 40 years old. There is a nice vintage feel to this disc. Its obvious that the original recording is pretty good to begin with with not a lot of shortcomings. Things are recorded very faithful and full. Its possible that there might be a little wear on some tracks but all in all I was most happy and actually surprised by the fidelity of this sacd. It has excellent vocals, nice bass and beautifully rendered acoustic and electric guitars. The twang and energy is all here. A nice bottom end is also present. There is a nice crackle and sparkle of life on most of this sacd and I can barely find a thing to complain about. A lot of analogue goodness is on this sacd as well as musicality and a touch of air..

Some tracks might not grab everyone but there are others that one cant help but love. The track Pickin up the pieces is on every greatest hits compilation and it sounds good. But other unknown tracks like the awesome instrumental Grand Junction perfectly encapsulates what this band was about. I dare you to not move your feet to that one. the ENERGY AND FLAVOR IS PRESERVED PERFECTLY BY Hoffman. other TRACKS LIKE OH yeah ARE OTHER EXAMPLES OF THE QUALITY OF SONGS ON THIS ALBUM.

my ACTUAL SCORE IS 4 AND A QUARTER.

highly RECOMMENDED.
excellent JOB mR. Hoffman
