This is Paavo Järvi's third installment in his ongoing recorded cycle of the Bruckner symphonies with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Like the previous discs (symphonies 7 and 9), this one is a magnificent evocation of Bruckner's sound world. Järvi has the measure of this complex work, and his orchestra does it full justice. It is impossible to choose a "best" recorded performance of B5 -- there are magisterial recordings from such as Karajan, Konwitschney, Eichhorn and Jochum, and also a competing SACD disc from Blomstedt -- but this one surely belongs in this august company. Highly recommended.
