The intro to this album says it all: "It's recording in the moment, alive, with nothing added or subtracted after it happens. So, in short, this record is a collection of one-song concerts". Indeed it is - just sit back and enjoy Eric Bibbs straight from the heart, simple but very REAL and genuine unedited performance on "Shingle By Shingle" or backed by Janne Peterssons "Pump organ" (!) and "The Deacons" on "Where the Green Grass Grows". As always, Opus 3 know how to record and produce for SACD, intelligently utilizing the rear surround channels for gentle acoustic information to recreate the "sparks" at the moment of recording. Even the Red Book CD layer sounds excellent on my CD Walkman. Both Eric Bibb and Opus 3 succeed. This is a very "likeable" album, to which I return over and over again. This is a multichannel record for purists. They claim have recorded the material using Blumlein stereo microphone + a separate microphone for bass. Everything is done analog using tube amplification and mixing. But the rear channel information must have been extracted from the original stereo with digital signal processing because there just is no other alternative with this quality.

And the result is excellent. Music is also superb and Eric is undoubtly a recent master of the country blues. I personally did not expect to like this record so much as I finally did.

The only drawback of Blumlein stereo recordings is that they create an experiene of listening the performers from about 20m distance and drumming is attenuted. But anyhow the result is great and comparable with Chesky's masterpieces in multichannel recording.
