One or two of you may have noticed that my opinion of this disc has changed...substantially. What a difference a second listen makes!
This is a very-nicely-recorded collection of second-level French works that may appeal to lots of us; I really enjoyed the new-to-me Koechlin piece with its very-unusual instumental combinations. I can't comment on the conducting except that it satisfied me. The orchestral playing was quite good without being world-class.
It's the recording that has changed for me from first to second listen. Quite natural* in perspective, it's still detailed. There's substantial space around the orchestra, but I don't hear much character to it. For the bottom-octave fans, the bassdrum is HUGE and quite natural sounding.
Highly recommended.
* That can mean MUCH-different things to different people; my perspective is that of a lover of big-orchestra Classical music who loves attending many concerts.
