A stunning disc. Albrecht´s Ravel is pure magic and it was a real pleasure to hear Les Bandar-Log again. What a great piece of music. The playing is wonderful and the conducting really inspired. Add to that sound that is spectacular.
The text in the booklet is aimed at younger listeners and is rather irritating, as is the hideous cover.

Gee, you're back.

A guest appearance only since this SACD is so good. Why, zeus, don´t you throw this idiot out of here? Dutchman has polluted this site for so long now. Well, it´s your loss, readers.

What a privilege.

Of course, you're right about one thing: for this repertoire we did need a new disc.

I could probably have done with something other than "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" -- or should that be "The Apprentice Sorcerer? -- but I love the Koechlin, having owned the BBC SO/Dorati performance for many decades so I shall buy this SACD for that. I already have the excellent RQR SACD of Haitink's marvellous performance of the Ravel but this Albrecht performance sounds like a gem, too.

I have an entirely different impression of the Sorcerer's Apprentice". I used to dismiss it well, as "Mickey Mouse" music. But then I heard it live at the Verbier Festival in 2006. Paavo Jarvi did a magnificent job of demonstrating that this is anything but "Mickey Mouse" music. It is a very compelling and dramatic tone poem. One I have been looking forward to on SACD for 4 years now.

I hope it was recorded with a discrete center channel! If it is a Polyhymnia recording it was. But the last discs from Strasbourg were not, and so even in multi-channel there is that poorly defined center image typical of stereo recordings...something that well recorded multi-channel such as by Polyhymnia, Sound Mirror, Tudor, BIS, Coviello, etc long ago made obsolescent.

The good news is the most recent Orchestre Phiharmonique de Strasbourg; Schumann, Dvorak: Piano Concertos was recorded by Polyhymnia. I'll write them inquiring if they also did this Dukas, Ravel, Koechlin. I suspect they did.

I was wrong. This was not recorded by Polyhymnia. I'll pass.

It was recorded by the usual PentaTone team - Maarse etc. I think they are Polyhynmia. In any event, this recording is wonderful - no nonsense with the center channel or any other channel. I eagerly await their Korngold Symphony.

Hi Brian

If that is correct, then the person at Polyhymnia who answered my query about whether they recorded it, is incorrect. They said they didn't. Do you have the SACD? The booklet will state who was the production company, and who was the recording engineer. IMO, for MC, there's a world of difference between the Strasbourg PO Schuman/Dvorak recorded by Polyhymnia, and the earlier Strauss recorded by Wolfram Nehls producer, and Philipp Knop engineer.

Thanks for the info. I sure hope the info given to me is wrong.

Tom
