This collection of appropiately named vintage film scores was not recorded by the usual Telarc team with Michael Bishop in charge of recording.( Is this a sign of things to come after the recent announcement?)
A new name to me of Robert Friedrich was in charge of the recording which was made in one day about year ago. While he makes a good stab at it,it must be said that his recording lacks the focus, depth and open treble(especially with the Sanken CO-100K mics that have recently been brought in) that Mr Bishop brings to his work in the same venue. Kunzel is of course at home in this repertoire and his middle of the road interpretations work well and there are few miscalculations although his tentative start to the El Cid overture is one of them. However he brings the disc to a superb close with the Cossack ride from Taras Bulba.
An enjoyable disc then and self recommending to any one interested in a trip down a cinematic memory lane.
