This seems to be identical to Mozart: Flute Concertos - Bezaly, but with the addition of the delightful K299 flute and harp concerto.
So, what do you get when you add this ever-popular concerto to a disc that is already palapably five star? Answer - a much longer 5-star disc, with over 80 minutes of Mozart-y goodness.
Of course, Mozart famously disliked the flute; you would never guess this from the disc, however! There is none of the profundity and depth of the clarinet concerto, for instance. Consider this disc as Mozart-lite, in many ways, therefore. However, carefree and angst-free Mozart is still Mozart, after all.
Sharon Bezaly's playing is a delight throughout. Moreover, her ravishing silvery tone is beautifully and accurately reproduced here. Before you all complain that her flute is gold, I have to report that it sounds light, crystalline and silvery to me... so there.
Just where on earth is Ostrobothnia, I hear you ask? It's a region of Finland and, from the evidence here, it has a fine chamber band. Discretely distanced in the mix, its playing is alert and supports the soloists most sympathetically.
Nice recording, too. The flute has startlingly clear impact, and every detail of the orchestra is set clearly and transparently in a comfortable acoustic.
All in all, only a curmudgeon could find it in their heart not to like this disc.
A curmudgeon might then point out that the K299 is recorded somewhat more closely than the other pieces; however, the awful problems of balancing flute, harp and orchestra - live or in recording - explains this.
But since I'm not a curmudgeon, let's forget we mentioned that!
