Reviews: McCoy Tyner with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster

This album is still a bit of an enigma to me. It starts as a more or less traditional jazz album with a distinctly modern sound to it and whammo, track 4 turns it into ...yes what exactly? Funky soul? Fusion? Pop Jazz (too unkind a characterization imo)? I just cannot seem to get used to the transition. I have similar feelings about some of the other content on this album. This SACD has been out for a while now and I have listened to it many times before I passed judgement. I guess I am missing the emotional connection with this album.

Stanley Clarke is without doubt a great bass player, but somehow I don't think this pairing has produced the synergy they were obviously hoping for. I also have heard people comment that playing acoustic bass with an electric style does not always produce the best results. Perhaps this is what is happening in some of the songs. I would like to rate this album 2.5, but since our webmaster Stephen does not allow for that I give it a three. Having said that, this is not a bad album and there is much to like. I can easily see other folks giving it a much higher rating.

The sonics of this pure DSD recorded SACD belong to some of the best out there and with a total playing time of just over 65 minutes it can be considered a good value. If only I liked it more... (it's available to swap :-)

Sonics:
stereo sonics: I like this music very much, don`t care which genre it belongs to. It`a fine trio, but I don`t judge music or performance, because this is a matter of taste. The soud is a bit dull and lacks a bit brilliance

A good Sacd for Tyner's fans.It has not the best sound of my collection (don't forget it was one of the first sacd)but it is good enought to listen.
