Dans l'histoire générale de l'orchestration, le XXème siècle est un tournant pour son évolution, avec notamment l'apparition du courant impressionniste dont Claude Debussy en est la figure emblématique. Les compositeurs se réclamant de ce courant, "commencent à accentuer le rôle de la couleur orchestrale au sens purement pictural du terme", précise Michael Hurd avant d'ajouter que "la couleur harmonique et orchestrale fait à présent partie intégrante de la composition au même titre que la construction". En ce sens, "les impressionnistes s'écartent de l'écriture antérieure, brossée avec des traits vigoureux et des contours fermes, pour s'intéresser aux touches sonores subtiles, utilisant une technique qui s'apparente à celle de l'aquarelle". Le magnifique Super Audio CD qui nous occupe ici se penche sur l'orchestration d'œuvres pour piano de Debussy, avec "Children's Corner" orchestré par André Caplet, "Six Epigraphes Antiques" par le célèbre chef d'orchestre Ernest Ansermet, "Clair de Lune" avec deux orchestrations différentes de Léopold Stokowski et d'André Caplet, "Sarabande" et "Danse" par Maurice Ravel, ainsi que "La Soirée dans Grenade" et la "Petite Suite" orchestrées par Henri Busser. Programme copieux et fort bien construit que l'orchestre symphonique de la ville de Québec incarne avec un brio et un sens des couleurs absolument parfaits. Le chef d'orchestre Yoav Talmi sait trouver la souplesse idéale des phrasés et l'évidence de l'articulation, au sein d'un équilibre des pupitres tout aussi parfait. Voilà bien un disque rare à la prise de son remarquable respectant timbres et espace aussi bien en multicanal qu'en stéréo. Un SA-CD magique pour tous les amoureux de la musique de Debussy et les passionnés d'orchestration.

I have always had a soft spot for the music of Claude Debussy. I was particularly excited to see that this disc contained the remarkable "Petite Suite", arranged by Henri Busser. Just listen to the flute in "En Bateau"! I have always loved this work and simply had to have it on SA-CD. I was not disappointed.
This disc is filled with music that will charm the pants off of you. These are sensitive and emotional readings of many of Debussy's works originally written for the piano. These are transcriptions for Orchestra by composers like Andre Caplet, Ernest Ansermet, Leopold Stokowski, Maurice Ravel and Henri Busser.
Yaov Talmi is a sensitive Debussy conductor and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec are a first rate group of musicians in this repertoire. Woodwinds have always played a major part in Debussy's music and this orchestra have a remarkable tonal pallete in their winds section! Just listen to "The Little Shepherd" from "Children's Corner" suite.
This is music made for relaxing or daydreaming. Filled with sensitivity, gentleness, mystery and innocence, this disc will help you truly unwind.
Debussy's music has always been about tone colour and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec bring out the colours in this music. Debussy was labelled an "impressionist" composer. A term he disliked, but it is not hard to see why he was given such a title. This evocative music is filled with colorful imagery.
Provactive, gentle and poweful, this is a disc that all Debussy fans will want to return to again and again. The sound on this disc is warm and pleasing and makes for a very enjoyable time of drifting off to who knows where. All Debussyians will appreciate this magical collection of music. With over 70 minutes of music, this a collection that is hard to resist. I also appreciate the attractive booklet and silk screening on the disc label.
I do hope that we will see more collections of music by Claude Debussy featuring Yoav Talmi and the OSQ on Atma Classique in the future. Very highly recommended.

| The music on this SACD is orchestral transcriptions of music originally written for piano or two pianos.It's not actually a bad disc, but I can't help thinking that there is something missing with both performance and recording. The playing is generally very good, but when one compares, for example, the Petite Suite with the Ernest Ansermet recording of 1957 (on records), it lacks something in urgency and passion. The recorded sound is smooth and detailed, but perhaps a little too recessed for my tastes. All in all a little too laid back.
