this is a real disappointment. i thought a sacd from sony is a highlight considering the great artistic and sound quality of former releases as the tchaikovsky, bell, thomas release. first this sacd is recorded in 24/96 and not in DSD. second the sound in MC comes almost only from the right speakers, something i have never heard before. i think its a engineering problem. to sum the sound quality up, this is a bad SACD. the performance is quite unemotional, usually scriabin opens my heart and his preludes take you to another place. not so in this recording, its played - lets say - in a cold way. perhaps i made a mistake buying a sacd from a artist i dont know very much. its the first stanev cd i buyed and i think also the first cd release with stanev (besides some cds which are not available anymore). - i wonder whats up with sony releasing sacds (this one or the schumann, kauten release) with artists nobody knows and artists who obviously dont have the quality to be released by a major label. i dont also understand the bad sound quality in MC. its a bit crazy: you dont get a sacd with villazon, rattle, (other emi or dgg artists)..., but stanev or klauten are released in sacd??!!!

Born on Christmas Day,Mother died within a year, went into hysterics as a child when he and the piano were parted as it was moved to its summer home,along with his personal idiosyncronies make Alex an interesting character enough for a film. His musical style which he seems to limit to solo piano and a few symphonic works (some with piano) shows this obsessive nature.As a listener it is not the easiest music to love as it does occasionaly sound like poor mans Rachmaninov and others without the big tunes. Sometimes the rather thick scoring with plenty of notes and embelishment being played can make its difficulty outweigh its interest. So this is not a set of music (early in his career) thats going to wow you except for its technical well balanced presentation. I would agree withh JJs remarks as to this particular players performance but to some extent possibly the "greater" pianists he mentioned have interpreted the music better.Making it sound like Rachmaninov etc Comparing these performances with others and the other sacd of BiS similair and later works is interesteing.I have been unhappy with a few of the piano recordings on BIS and the main reason is the non DSD issue brought up in a thread recently. This 24/96 has deeper and better tone than the bis issue and also the Kemp Mussorgsky/Balakirev disc which also seems shorn of those very deeper notes. Even though the performances as Polly states are extraordinary.My only gripe is the slightly tooo close recording which also serves to flatten the piano perspective .So you get a pianist thats not using over the top dynamics with a composer who writes occasionally dense music and a slightly flattened image perspective along with the limitations of 24/96 against 24/192.whew. Otherwise an interesting addition to the collection. In hindsight..some extra info.Tracks 1-24 24 Preludes.ALL in a different Key and none longer than 2 minutes.(30.25 in all) Piano sonata 2 (fantasy) 11.11 Sonata 3 19.53 and a delightfull etude 2.20 to finish. Booklet German French English very informative and details of Bulgarian pianist plus proper sacd case.
