Performance:   Sonics:
Roy Haynes (dr) played with Charlie Parker, Art Pepper, Sarah Vaughan, Lester Young, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Pat Metheney, Eric Dolphy ... I can go on. Here he assembles 6 great musicians to make a memorable album playing some Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer and Horace Silver tunes as well as one of his own (Shades of Senegal 2).

The atmosphere is thoroughly modern, upbeat, it swings like crazy and I cannot say enough about Dave Holland and Christian McBride tuneful bass playing. John Scofield plays a major role on this album and his guitar work is driving, sensitive and melodic. It just flows and flows. Same goes for Kenny Baron and David Kikoshi on piano. Joshua Redman plays tenor sax. There is a certain edge in their playing that makes the proceedings different and unpredictable. Not that they ever loose sight of the melody but the group adds just enough adventurous soloing to make this an album that will continue to surprise even upon repeated listening.

The sound quality is among the very best available on SA-CD. I am very enthusiastic about this album. It assembles an interesting set of tunes and mixes them with just the appropriate improvisation by a very cool group of musicians. You should seek it out when you get the chance.

PS: DeSelby was right again! (I think I am the only one here who appreciates his contribution :-)
