Reviews: Richie Beirach Trio: What Is This Thing Called Love?

Performance:   Sonics:
I was unfamiliar with Richie Beirach prior to this recording. I bought it on the strength of all the other Venus single layer SACDs that I have been ordering. They are all top notch both in performance and especially in sound quality. I doubt you will find better sounding jazz SACDs anywhere. The quality with Venus has been very consistent. I hope they branch out to a more varied scope, all of there releases so far have been straight ahead jazz focusing on standards. There is nothing wrong with that, as Seinfield said, but it would be nice to hear some variety, so maybe there is something wrong. I suspect Venus just has their niche and they are sticking to it. Anyways, if you enjoy jazz trios performing standards very well and have an ear for quality recordings be sure to check out the Venus Records growing list of SACDs.
The playing here is strong, you have heard all the songs before yet they sound fresh and alive. The bass is fat and deep and well executed and the drumming is crisp and he varies his technique to keep it interesting and appropriate to the tune. This release is quite enjoyable at all levels. This site does not show Acoustic Sounds as a place of purchase but that is where I bought this title along with some other Venus recordings.
