Reviews: Supreme Jazz: Charles Mingus

Performance:   Sonics:
The music is a rather un-descript concert; good jazz but unfortunately nothing to write home about.
The recording fails to shine; maybe it is the fault of the original masters, maybe the mixing in SACD.
If you are looking for a classic jazz SACD to enjoy great music and sound look somewhere else.

Music by Charles Mingus was highly recommended to me by my friends - professional musicians - long time ago, but it took almost 30 years to understand why. His later most famous records Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um and Charles Mingus: Pithecanthropus Erectus are complex and at times disturbing. I didn't know how to enjoy them. This album, originally released in 1954 as The Jazz Experiments of Charles Mingus (one track is added on this SACD) is more accessible, and it gave me the key to understanding one of the most outstanding musicians of the 20th century.

The well-known standard by Arlen/Koelher called Stormy Weather became an eye-opener to me. While Thad Jones plays the main theme in clean and almost popular manner, the bass lives in another dimension which at first hearing appears independent and somewhat abstract. At the moment when you hear that all dimensions belong to the same universe - you find yourself in Heaven.

The stereo mix is as good as other SACD reissues recorded in 50th. Very natural but not too much detailed.

I highly recommend this album as an introduction course to the wonderful world of Mingus. It has changed my life.
