Jacintha has been surrounded by much debate on the internet. Did we need another female jazz singer in 'Diana Krall' mode etc. etc.? Personally I think the lady settled that debate herself with this album. And all the Groove Note stuff is just absolutely gorgeous soundwise. (Check out Ying Tan's outfit on the web and explore his other SACD's).
Jacintha has what some people call a 'breathy' style of singing. And yes she does often use that technique but there is much more to her than that. I have little patience for singers that just go for the 'sexy' effect and evidence very little real life emotion. So far, none of Jacintha's albums have bored me. I find them all engaging and sophisticated but 'Lush Life' projects a more mature and experienced singer than the previous albums imho.
There are a lot of instruments accompanying her on this disc; strings (cello, viola, violin), flugelhorn, harp, bass, drums and guitar (by Antony Wilson - check out his album "Our Gang"). The arrangements are very tasteful and provide for a 'lush' ambience to standards like 'Summertime' and 'The Shadow Of Your Smile'. Her rendition of the latter song is slower than usual. I think it works.

Jacintha does it her "own way" and it really works here. One can only marvel at how she nails what seems to be in many cases an off tempo presentation. After listening for a while you see how "right" she makes it sound. The great instrumental backing makes this recording all the more enjoyable. Jacintha's abilities are highlited by her presentation of the extremely difficult but, one of my favourite numbers, 'Harlem Nocturne' not an easy song to carry off.
As to the sonics this is one of the better SACDs that I have heard and shouldn't disappoint anyone in that department. I have her latest SACD on order and I am eagerly awaiting its arrival.
This SACD review is based on listening in 2 channel stereo.

I had not heard of Jacintha before, but when I bought my Arcam CD37, I bought several discs that the shop had in stock....
I was horrified that I'd missed out up until now! she has the most fantastic, wonderful, deep and resonating and pretty and soulful voice. If I had to take one disc to the desert island I'd take this (and also cram Brubecks Time Out in the same box)
Fabulous sound quality... it saved my speakers from upgraditis, I realised how good they could sound.
