This SACD is certainly "off the beaten track" repertoire-wise.BIS is one of few record companies today that dare to venture into new territories. But just like their earlier Takemitsu disc which I like very much, this is a disc that gradually reveals it's true value.
It is a bit like exploring a rainforest, you need to spend quite some time there, to actually see more than lots of big trees.
Not that all of the music on this disc, is as "difficult" as Takemitsu's music, but you need time to let these pieces really sink in.But when they have, they are just what the title says "Prayers without words".
The two splendid soloists Håkan Hardenberger trumpet and the organist Simon Preston present these Prayers for trumpet and organ admirably, in the spacious acoustic of the Aarhus Cathedral in Denmark.
And once again the BIS engineers have produced sound quality of equal excellence!
If you want a recording that lets you enjoy, not only music of both expressive and meditative qualities, but also the tonal and dynamic range of trumpet and organ in the vast acoustic of a church, in pure DSD sound, I recommend you to listen to this disc.

I've been a fan of Hakan Hardenberger's recordings for several years and was excited to see he had a SACD release "Prieres sans Paroles". I should mention that I also enjoy 20th century trumpet works by composers such as Jolivet, Tomasi, Chaynes, Antheil, Hindemith, and Desenclos. Sad that no one warned me that this disc is a compilation of inaccessible and academic musical writing. The musicians are outstanding, and the BIS sound is fine, but the music is not enjoyable; even for someone with hundreds of 20th century music cd's in his collection. Skip this one.

If you are a fan of Hardenberger, I can strongly recommend on rbcd:

CS-287 (BIS), Hakan Hardenburger on Trumpet, “The Virtuoso
Trumpet”
7243 5 56760 (EMI), Hakan Hardenburger on Trumpet, Leif Ove
Andsnes on Piano, Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1

If you want something in the Avant-garde spirit on SACD for brass, but yet enjoyable, I recommend Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
