A very nice contribution off The Gents in this French program. The singing is strong and beautifull at the same time, sometimes it could be more delicate, for instance in the Requim.
My favorie piece is the "Messe com Jubilo" this is a beautiful mix off Durufle's organ music and Gregorian chant. The Gloria and Sanctus are bild up to a very powerfull end, and what a powerfull voices they have!
Beside the pieces for organ and choir the a capella pieces are sung very delicate with beautiful voicing.
The Recording is of the high Channel classics standard, the balance off the recording is on the mix off the organ and voices wich blend beautifull. There is not to much (or for some to less) resonance but a clear acoustical ambiance, wich ceeps all sung lines clear.

| now this is going to sound SO picky.... - but there's a sense in which the singing on these discs is just a little TOO squeaky-clean for its own good. it's as close to perfect technically as you're likely to hear, but as so often when technical perfection is aimed at something else is missing. call it spontaneity, imagination, the type of interpretive gesture which makes a performance really live for the listener. virtually everything in the gents' interpretations here is very carefully calculated, and i found myself constantly marvelling at the technical mastery of the singing, but oddly unmoved by the music (one shouldn't be, given the repertoire). the superbly clean recording made by channel's engineers unwittingly accentuates this slightly clinical impression. i still enjoyed these discs, but not quite in the way i was expecting to.
